Summary: Khan Academy is a nonprofit dedicated to delivering a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere. The Senior Quality Engineer will ensure the quality and reliability of web-based products by engaging in manual testing and test automation, collaborating with cross-functional teams to advocate for exceptional user experiences throughout the product development lifecycle. Responsibilities: - Ensure the quality and reliability of our web-based products used by schools and learners to improve educational outcomes - Engage in both manual testing and test automation, developing and maintaining automated tests to detect regressions while also performing comprehensive manual testing of new features - Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, and support teams to advocate for exceptional user experiences through all stages of the product design and development lifecycle - Define your team’s quality strategy (thresholds for good quality, plans for investing in different types of testing, etc.) in collaboration with your manager, then work with teammates to bring it to fruition - Own manual test plan development and execution for new features on the team - Build and maintain new test automation to fill coverage gaps using insights from manual testing, stakeholder priorities, and industry best practices - Collaborate with cross-functional partners throughout the SDLC, including planning, design reviews, and development discussions to ensure quality is considered from the beginning - Use your creativity and extensive knowledge of testing tools and frameworks to find, document, and track bugs - Contribute to engineering guilds such as the Quality and Accessibility guilds, and participate in organizational affinity groups to foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment Required Qualifications: - Proven experience in software product testing and test automation with a focus on quality engineering - Proficiency in test automation tools like Cypress, with hands-on experience writing and maintaining automated tests - Strong manual testing skills, capable of designing and executing thorough test cases - Hands-on experience using AI development tools to accelerate the QE role in novel ways - Experience shaping an engineering team's quality strategy - Expertise in JavaScript/TypeScript for test automation and Python for backend testing, with an openness to learning new tools, systems, and languages - Experience in UNIX/Linux environments, and familiarity with using virtual machines or containers - Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines, such as Jenkins - Knowledge of accessibility testing, including automated a11y testing, and familiarity with WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines - Excellent documentation and communication skills to effectively collaborate and enhance testing processes - Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams—product managers, designers, engineers, educational content creators, and support staff—to ensure product quality and reliability - Motivated by the Khan Academy mission 'to provide a free world-class education for anyone, anywhere.' - Proven cross-cultural competency skills demonstrating self-awareness, awareness of other, and the ability to adopt inclusive perspectives, attitudes, and behaviors to drive inclusion and belonging throughout the organization Required Skills: Test automation, JavaScript/TypeScript, Cypress Important Skills: Manual testing, AI development tools, CI/CD pipelines, UNIX/Linux Nice-to-Have Skills: Accessibility testing, Collaboration skills Benefits: Competitive salaries, Ample paid time off as needed – Your well-being is a priority, 8 pre-scheduled Wellness Days in 2026 occurring on a Monday or a Friday for a 3-day weekend boost, Remote-first culture - that caters to your time zone, with open flexibility as needed, at times, Generous parental leave, An exceptional team that trusts you and gives you the freedom to do your best, The chance to put your talents towards a deeply meaningful mission and the opportunity to work on high-impact products that are already defining the future of education, Opportunities to connect through affinity, ally, and social groups, 401(k) + 4% matching & comprehensive insurance, including medical, dental, vision, and life
