Job Description
Summary: Joby Aviation is a pioneering company working towards the certification of its electric aircraft. They are seeking a highly organized and passionate student to join their battery team, focusing on cell testing and performance analysis for VTOL electric aircraft.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research and experiments on different batteries using cycling equipment
- Occasionally complete cell teardowns for materials investigation
- Conduct experiments or measurements for individual cells to characterize physical and electrochemical properties
- Develop methods and tools to analyze data sets and communicate the key findings to multidisciplinary teams for product development
- Work closely with the following teams:
- Equipment design team to facilitate project equipment requirements
- Data Science team to consume and produce findings from large data sets
- Lab Technicians to facilitate lab functions, operation, experiment setup, and monitoring
Required Qualifications:
- Pursuing B.S. or above in Electrochemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or related engineering discipline
- Heading into junior or senior year of undergraduate degree or above at time of internship
- Available Summer/Fall 2026
- Knowledge of Li-ion cell chemistry and mechanisms
- Experience with testing equipment such as battery cyclers, potentiostats, and electrochemical cells
- Strong work ethic with an affinity for team-oriented work
- Strong attention to detail, documentation, and implementation of operating procedures
- Capable of balancing and prioritizing multiple tasks and projects
- Capable of prioritizing safe practice in the workplace
- Experience in relevant programming languages. (Python, MATLAB)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with cell teardowns and characterization techniques
- Glove box or cell fabrication experience
- Proficient at setting up and writing scripts for battery cycling equipment. (Maccor, Arbin, Neware, etc.)
- History of experiments to obtain data supporting a BMS and/or performance modeling of a cell level technology
- Expertise in cell fabrication
- Experience with large form factor cell/pack handling
- Research / previous intern experience on Li-ion cell
- Proficient in relevant programming languages. (Python, MATLAB)
