Main Purpose of the Position
To oversee plant operations from the control room, ensuring systems function correctly and providing expert operational support for daily activities.
Job Objectives
- Safety and Documentation: To maintain a safe work environment, follow EHSS standards, and ensure accurate safety-related documentation.
- Process Monitoring: To continuously monitor and control site processes using DCS and other control systems to ensure efficiency and reliability.
- Equipment Operation: To start, stop, and adjust equipment based on system readings, alarms, and engineering instructions.
- Communication and Coordination: To serve as the communication hub between field operators, supervisors, and external service providers, ensuring smooth operations.
- Training and Leadership: To train team members on control systems to ensure operational knowledge and continuity.
- Incident Response and Reporting: To respond to irregularities, maintain logs, and provide accurate handover and process reports.
- Customer Satisfaction: To ensure product supply reliability, quality, and flexibility to meet customer needs.
- Problem-Solving and Support: To collaborate in troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and implementing sustainable corrective actions.
Formal Qualifications/Education
Essential
Diploma or associate degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, industrial technology, or a related technical field
Preferred
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology is preferred but not mandatory
Relevant certifications:
Power Industry Standards:
- NERC Reliability Coordinator or System Operator Certification (essential for grid interaction roles)
- Gasification Process Operations Certification (available through specialized industry training programs or OEMs)
- Combined Cycle Power Plant Operations Training (for facilities that integrate gasification with combined-cycle systems)
Emergency and Safety Management Certifications:
- Incident Command System (ICS) Certification (FEMA/NIMS) for emergency coordination
- First Aid/CPR/AED Certification (mandatory in many facilities)
Control Systems Expertise:
- Advanced SCADA/HMI Training for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems
- DCS Training in systems like ABB, Siemens, or Emerson DeltaV, often customized for gasification facilities
Environmental and Regulatory Compliance:
- ISO 14001 Certification for Environmental Management Systems
- Environmental Emissions Control Training (e.g., SOx, NOx, and CO2 mitigation strategies)
Optional certifications:
- Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
- NFPA 70E Certification
Job Related Work Experience
Essential
Work experience in process operations, especially in Power Generation combined cycle 3-5 Years
Experience in control room or control board operations 1-2 Years
Experience in responding to system alarms, troubleshooting issues, and supporting emergency shutdowns
Preferred
Experience in a refinery plant and/or the petrochemical industry / DCS control system for plant operations
Job Related Knowledge and skills
Technical knowledge of all control room operations activities, tasks and responsibilities
