Senior Mechanical/Robotics Engineering… at Infratek… · Hybrid…

Principal Mechanical & Robotics Engineering Consultant

About Infratek

Infratek is a technology company developing advanced systems for inspecting and maintaining critical infrastructure, including bridges, roadways, and other structures as well as assistive robotics systems for on-demand and accessible mobility.

We design, integrate, and manufacture autonomous robotic platforms, non-destructive evaluation technologies, and supporting software systems.

The Opportunity

Infratek is seeking a highly experienced Mechanical and Robotics Engineering Consultant to serve as a senior technical advisor to our engineering team.

This is not an entry-level or early-career position. We are looking for a seasoned engineering professional with extensive, hands-on industry experience developing complex robotic, electromechanical, or automated machinery. The ideal consultant has taken multiple systems from concept through detailed design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, deployment, and field support.

You will help our team solve difficult engineering problems, conduct rigorous design reviews, identify technical risks, troubleshoot failures, and make sound engineering decisions. You should be equally comfortable reviewing calculations and drawings, working directly with hardware, and mentoring engineers.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a senior technical authority for robotic mechanical systems and subsystems.
• Lead and participate in mechanical design reviews, architecture reviews, failure investigations, and technical risk assessments.
• Help the engineering team solve complex problems involving mechanisms, structures, actuators, motors, sensors, pneumatics, hydraulics, and other electromechanical components.
• Review designs, calculations, simulations, engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, test plans, and manufacturing documentation.
• Evaluate system architecture and component selections for performance, reliability, safety, manufacturability, maintainability, and cost.
• Guide the transition of research prototypes into robust, repeatable, field-ready commercial products.
• Support mechanism design, structural analysis, dynamics, vibration analysis, tolerance analysis, thermal considerations, materials selection, and failure analysis.
• Conduct root-cause investigations and recommend practical corrective actions.
• Provide guidance on design for manufacturing and assembly, supplier capabilities, fabrication processes, and production readiness.
• Work closely with mechanical, electrical, controls, and software engineers to ensure effective system integration.
• Participate in hands-on assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and evaluation when required.
• Mentor team members and help establish disciplined engineering practices, design-review processes, and documentation standards.
• Maintain high standards of engineering judgment, professional ethics, safety, and attention to detail.

Required Experience and Qualifications

• At least 15 years of relevant professional engineering experience, including substantial experience with robotics, automation, industrial machinery, or complex electromechanical systems. (10 years may be acceptable in case of noteworthy achievements)
• A demonstrated record of successfully delivering multiple physical products or robotic systems from concept through deployment.
• Deep practical expertise in mechanical engineering fundamentals, including machine design, mechanisms, materials, structural analysis, dynamics, vibration, fatigue, tolerancing, and failure analysis.
• Extensive experience integrating actuators, motors, transmissions, bearings, sensors, pneumatics, hydraulics, and fabricated or machined components.
• Strong command of GD&T, tolerance analysis, design for manufacturing and assembly, engineering drawings, and configuration control.
• Experience performing or critically reviewing FEA and other quantitative engineering analyses.
• Strong proficiency with SolidWorks or a comparable professional 3D CAD platform.
• Experience diagnosing difficult field, prototype, or production failures using structured root-cause methods.
• Sound engineering judgment and the ability to identify risks that may not be apparent through analysis alone.
• Ability to communicate complex technical matters clearly and provide direct, constructive feedback.
• Experience mentoring engineers and working effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
• Willingness to engage directly with hardware and testing—not solely provide high-level advice.

A bachelor’s degree in mechanical or robotics engineering or a closely related field is preferred. Equivalent experience may also be considered. Advanced academic credentials are welcome, but they are not a substitute for extensive hands-on industry experience and a demonstrated record of delivering real-world systems.

Preferred Experience

• Experience designing mobile robots, autonomous systems, industrial automation, or other complex electromechanical systems.
• Experience developing safety-critical machinery that operates near people, vehicles, equipment, or public infrastructure.
• Strong understanding of robotic mechanical architecture, including drivetrains, steering, suspension, braking, stability, actuation, and precision positioning.
• Experience designing rugged equipment for outdoor, industrial, or otherwise demanding operating environments.
• Experience integrating mechanical systems with motors, actuators, sensors, batteries, controls, communications, and autonomous-navigation hardware.
• Experience conducting hazard analyses, design risk assessments, FMEA, fault-tree analysis, and formal engineering design reviews.
• Experience designing load-bearing, lifting, positioning, or material-handling mechanisms with appropriate safety factors and fail-safe features.
• Experience developing verification and validation programs, including structural, proof-load, fatigue, vibration, stability, environmental, reliability, misuse, and fault-condition testing.
• Experience transitioning research prototypes or first-generation designs into reliable, maintainable, and manufacturable commercial products.
• Familiarity with low-volume manufacturing, supplier qualification, fabrication methods, assembly processes, quality control, and production readiness.
• Experience troubleshooting difficult prototype, field, or production failures and leading structured root-cause investigations.
• Working knowledge of electrical systems, controls, embedded systems, or robotics software sufficient to support multidisciplinary system integration.
• Experience mentoring engineering teams and serving as a technical reviewer or design authority.
• Experience working with customers, manufacturers, regulatory organizations, testing laboratories, or other external technical stakeholders.

Engagement

• Consulting or contract engagement, with the scope and schedule determined by project needs.
• Fully remote (continental US) with on-site participation required for selected design reviews, hardware evaluations, and testing activities.
• Longer-term or expanded engagement may be considered based on mutual fit and company needs.

What Success Looks Like

The successful consultant will quickly earn the confidence of the engineering team, improve the quality of critical technical decisions, identify problems before they reach the field, and help transform promising prototypes into safe, reliable, and manufacturable commercial products.
