Job Description
Summary: II-VI Aerospace & Defense is seeking a confident and capable Intern to join their Horsham Mechanical Engineering Team. The role involves assisting with Optical Transceiver design, thermal analysis, and production manufacturing support, with the potential for a full-time position in the future.
Responsibilities:
- Perform 3D modeling of parts, assemblies and drawings using Solidworks (preferred)
- Understand heat-transfer fundamentals and possess the ability to perform FEA thermal analysis (experience with Flotherm a plus)
- Interface with Electrical Engineers for collaboration on printed circuit board design layout
- Perform stress simulations and/or motion studies within Solidworks (preferred)
- Research and pursue samples for testing of new technologies such as vapor chamber, heat-pipes and advanced thermal transfer materials
- Review and complete standard engineering checklists
- Perform Design for Manufacturing (DFM) analyses
- Assist with ongoing thermal studies with a focus on reducing internal component temperatures
- Compile information for concept proposals and product design reviews
- Assist with FDM 3D printer optimization
- Develop concepts and detailed designs for fixturing to aid with product assembly and test
- Assist with debug and corrective action related to module and test station assemblies
- Operate optical inspection equipment to assist with incoming and outgoing inspection of product and materials
- Attend weekly meetings and design reviews as required
- Provide feedback, alternate ideas and suggestions that could improve product quality and overall company productivity
Required Qualifications:
- Education should consist of B.S. degree with a major in Mechanical Engineering or general Engineering/Science
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office
- 3D Solid Modeling (Solidworks preferred) experience required
- Must be hard-working with good communication skills
- Must be able to work both independently, as well as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications:
- Perform 3D modeling of parts, assemblies and drawings using Solidworks (preferred)

- Perform stress simulations and/or motion studies within Solidworks (preferred)
- Thermal analysis (hand calculations or computer simulation) techniques a plus
- Should be well versed with hands-on assembly and disassembly of mechanical items
