Job Description
Summary: II-VI Aerospace & Defense is seeking a motivated Data Scientist Intern to join their SiC Data Systems team for Summer 2026. The intern will gain hands-on experience in Machine-Learning and Artificial Intelligence applications in manufacturing while contributing to projects that support large-scale manufacturing of next-generation semiconductor materials.
Responsibilities:
- Projects will be in LLM implementation (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) or machine-learning-based defect classification
- Guided ownership of entire project pipeline: problem identification, process discovery, solution design, and implementation
- Key skills involved include dataset construction, model training & validation, semantic layer engineering
- Close collaboration with software engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders
- By the end of the internship, a prototype of the selected project is expected
Required Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled students or those who have graduated within one year of the internship start date
- Education Level Required: pending bachelor's degree (rising senior) at minimum
- Majors: Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or other related STEM fields
- Must be US citizen or permanent resident
- Proficiency in AI model training or LLM context engineering
- Familiarity with Python-based data science ecosystem
- Sound understanding of foundations of AI/ML technologies
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Team-oriented but able to work independently when needed
- Adaptable and eager to learn in a fast-paced environment
- Attention to detail and time management
- Must be a U.S. Person as defined by ITAR (U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident, or protected individual)
- Compliance with all applicable export control regulations
Preferred Qualifications:
- Pending master's or doctoral degree is beneficial
- Relevant coursework or extracurricular experience in material science or manufacturing is a plus
