ICBL is Barbados’ largest general insurance provider, writing business in all areas of general insurance including, Property, Liability, Accident, Motor, Marine, Aviation and Transit Insurance. ICBL also offers insurance coverage for Group Life, Group Health and Individual and Group Pensions.
We are recruiting a Legal Officer, who will provide comprehensive legal support to the Company, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations and protecting the Company’s legal and commercial interests. The role involves drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts, managing legal documentation for bonds, representing the Company in court and providing sound legal advice to various Business Units, inter alia.
The position is at the level of Grade 3 (Assistant Manager) in the Company’s compensation structure and will report to the Senior Legal Officer or designate.
Main Areas of Responsibility
- Contract and Document Management
• Drafts, reviews and negotiates a variety of legal agreements including insurance-related contracts, service agreements, confidentiality agreements and broker agreements.
• Prepares bonds and guarantees to ensure compliance with internal and regulatory standards.
• Advises on policy wording to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
• Maintains the contract register and monitors the Company’s contractual obligations. - Legal Research and Advisory
• Conducts research on insurance regulatory developments, corporate law updates and industry best practices.
• Provides timely and practical legal advice to management and all Business Units of ICBL.
• Supports internal policy development and ensures alignment with legal and regulatory frameworks. - Claims and Litigation Support
• Initiates legal action to recover funds owed to ICBL by employees, customers or service providers.
• Negotiates claims settlements.
• Assists in the management of claims-related legal matters, subrogation files and litigation monitoring.
• Attends court and liaises with external Attorneys as required.
• Gathers supporting documents and evidence for ongoing legal proceedings. - Provides training on legal subject areas to other staff members as directed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned and necessary for the advancement of the Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
- Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B.)
- Legal Education Certificate (LEC)
- 1-2 years’ post-qualification experience.
- Prior exposure to commercial, corporate or insurance law would be an asset.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- High degree of integrity, discretion and professionalism.
- Strong drafting and analytical skills.
- Sound judgment and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across all levels of the organisation and with external stakeholders. Including the ability to influence, advise and collaborate effectively.
- Strong emotional intelligence, tact and diplomacy when handling sensitive or confidential matters.
- Ability to communicate complex legal concepts in a clear, practical and professional manner to non-legal audiences.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a dynamic environment.
