Job Description
Summary: Hypertherm Associates is part of a family of industrial cutting companies that designs and builds waterjet systems. As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will contribute to meaningful design work and gain hands-on experience while collaborating with experienced engineers.
Responsibilities:
- Evaluate, redesign, and validate existing machine components for conversion to additive manufacturing, with a focus on cost reduction, supplier risk reduction, and rapid iteration
- Provide focused test support through structural validation and applied manufacturing techniques
- Clearly document design decisions and implementation details in CAD and PLM systems
- Contribute to real engineering projects, with assignments driven by current team and business needs
Required Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
- Basic CAD modeling and engineering drawing generation (SolidWorks preferred)
- Foundational hypothesis testing and problem‑solving skills in a hands‑on mechanical or lab environment
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team‑based setting
- Comfort presenting and explaining design concepts and technical implementations
Preferred Qualifications:
- Exposure to engineering document control, GD&T, or additive manufacturing
- Comfort using hand tools in a machine‑shop or prototyping environment
- Exposure to industrial equipment, robotics, CNC, or electro‑mechanical systems (helpful, not required)
- Basic understanding of DFMA and complex tooling design principles
