Job Description
Summary: Hewlett Packard Enterprise is the global edge-to-cloud company advancing the way people live and work. The HPE Quantum team at HPE Labs is developing new approaches for quantum computing and is seeking summer interns to help advance their work in quantum algorithms, tensor networks, and quantum software development.
Responsibilities:
- Quantum algorithms based on tensor networks for simulating 1D and 2D quantum many-body systems
- Distributed strategies for quantum simulation (e.g., adaptive circuit knitting)
- Classical simulation algorithms based on matchgates, nonstabilizerness, etc
- Efficient encodings for fermionic systems
- Fault-tolerant quantum simulation of Fermi-Hubbard models
- Distributed quantum error-correction
- Develop software that supports Quantum Computing applications and HPC-QC system management through job management, scheduling, and workflow frameworks
- Contribute to software developed by others with bug reports, bug fixes, and other improvements
- Create software adapters that connect quantum computing software tools (compilers, SDKs, …) with quantum computing software produced by other groups using open standards where possible
- Assist in evaluating open-source and commercial software tools for inclusion in integrated HPC-QC programming and operational software
- Assist other software developers on the team with code reviews
- Implement and improve software prototypes to support research efforts
Required Qualifications:
- Pursuing PhD in quantum many-body physics, quantum chemistry, quantum computing or related fields. For software positions, pursuing a graduate degree in CS or a related field
- Proficiency in Python and C/C++
- Familiarity with quantum computing packages e.g. Cirq, Qiskit and/or quantum simulation
- Familiarity with quantum algorithms
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of computational physics, statistical physics, many-body physics simulations, or quantum computing
- Experience with quantum compiler or non-quantum compiler development
- Programming experience in high-performance computing (HPC) environments
- Experience with cloud computing platforms, GPU computing, or FPGA computing
- Experience with performance debugging and tuning
- Experience with quantum computing SDKs (e.g., Qiskit, CUDA-Q, TensorFlow Quantum, Pennylane)
- Experience with AI/ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch)
- Experience developing client/server software with TCP/IP or UDP
- Experience with Agile development methodologies
