Senior Ecological Management Specialist

The Opportunity:

The Lands Branch of the Ministry of Environment is seeking a highly motivated, independent individual to work within the Land Management & Permitting Unit for a two year term. The successful candidate will be part of a provincial team that is responsible for leading the ministry’s response to the complex and growing demands associated with multiple industries such as mineral exploration, oil and gas, irrigation or linear disturbances.

The position requires an energetic and knowledgeable individual with the demonstrated ability to establish successful working relationships with various internal and external stakeholders and bring demonstrated working knowledge and experience within these industries to the role. The successful candidate must thrive in a high workload volume atmosphere.

• Lead priority files involving emerging industries and resource development.
• Review and support Crown land and environmental regulatory decisions.
• Provide technical expertise on industry, policy and program issues.
• Work with ministries, agencies, Indigenous communities, industry and stakeholders.
• Assess competing environmental, regulatory, economic and policy interests.
• Conduct fieldwork, inspections and information gathering across Saskatchewan.
• Communicate technical and regulatory information clearly to diverse audiences.
• Mentor staff and provide guidance on emerging trends, policies and procedures.

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

You will have demonstrated a thorough knowledge of:

• Principles of integrated resource management and ecological protection;
• Industry/scientific terminologies and principles and applied methodologies related to relevant petroleum, natural gas or mineral exploration, and linear developments;
• General agricultural practices;
• Crown land management issues;
• Processes for reviewing, approving and monitoring the petroleum industry, the mineral exploration industry;
• Applicable acts, regulations and legislation; and
• First Nations and Métis constitutional rights, treaties and the relationship to the Duty to Consult and implementation of The First Nation and Métis Consultation Policy Framework, 2023

Typically, knowledge for this position is gained through a degree in natural sciences or integrated resource management, or other related degrees, supplemented by a minimum of ten years of related experience in environmental/ecological program delivery associated crown land management and recent experience regulating ecological/environmental impacts associated with oil and gas exploration, mineral exploration or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
