Responsibilities
This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
This employment opportunity is restricted to Nunavut Inuit who reside in Rankin Inlet only.
Reporting to the Principal, the Ilinniarvimmi Inuusiliriji is a community resource person and student advocate who supports, promotes and involves students, parents and the community as partners in education. The Ilinniarvimmi Inuusiliriji is an active member of the education staff and School Team and provides a liaison between the community, home, school and student. The Ilinniarvimmi Inuusiliriji provides support and guidance to students, promotes the relevance of education in the community and fosters mutual understanding between the community and the school while promoting self-fulfillment and success in life for students and provides cultural resources to the school staff.
Based on IQ principles, the Ilinniarvimmi Inuusiliriji’s main responsibilities are, but not limited to:
- Facilitating communication between classroom, family, community and students, building rapport with all, supporting engagement with Elders and parents, collaborating with community partners, and participating in the Community Interagency Committee.
- Working with staff and students to solve challenges, liaising with families and school teams to support attendance, academics and social emotional concerns, supporting conflict resolution, advocating for students, assisting parents and developing culturally appropriate support strategies with staff, parents and interagency teams.
- Supports students by listening to students, promoting social, emotional, skill and knowledge development, referring to the School Team, consulting with the School Team, providing interventions, fostering a positive learning environment, and improving knowledge and skill through training, reading, mentorship, meetings, teleconferences, committees, and consulting agencies.
Qualifications
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained from a Grade 12 Diploma or an Adult Basic Education equivalent to Grade 12 or higher, and two (2) years experience working at the community level with children. The ideal candidate should also have First Aid certificate, Computer literacy including programs such as Word and Excel, and has completed the Suicide Prevention training (ASIST) and Mental Health First Aid Training.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
