Job Description
Summary: EMC Insurance Companies is committed to teamwork and making an impact. They are seeking a Commercial Underwriter I to shadow experienced underwriters, evaluate accounts for risk selection, and maintain documentation while developing agency relationships.
Responsibilities:
- Shadows experienced underwriters to learn company and regional middle market risk appetite and gain experience in developing agency relationships
- Consults experienced underwriters to ask questions and gain understanding in underwriting best practices. Supports underwriting team by completing tasks, such as reviewing endorsements within authority limit and analyzing assigned new and renewal accounts
- Under supervision, evaluates basic middle market accounts for risk selection and pricing purposes within limited authority. Analyzes exposure, company and regional risk appetite, account premium and loss history, financial data, line(s) of business, price guidance, motor vehicle records, online sources of information, reports from premium audit or risk improvement and other relevant information to underwrite policies
- Maintains proper file documentation in connection with accounts
- Communicates with agents and provides updates on accounts
- Collaborates with marketing representatives to learn about building relationships and providing agents with good customer experiences, responsiveness, and ensuring they select EMC as their insurer of choice
- Attends peer training sessions, corporate workshops, and learning courses to enhance underwriting knowledge and skills
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in insurance or business administration, or equivalent relevant experience
- Good problem-solving and analytical skills and the ability to make sound decisions
- Strong customer service skills
- Ability to work effectively with others, as well as independently
- Ability to maintain high standards of professional competence
- Good computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media
- Ability to work on multiple projects while meeting deadlines
- Good written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Insurance designations, such as AINS, AU, CIC or CPCU
- Knowledge of commercial insurance products and coverage options
- Good negotiating skills
