Job Description
Summary: EMC Insurance Companies is dedicated to making an impact through teamwork and support. The Bond Underwriter I role involves assisting in the analysis and underwriting of surety accounts under supervision, while gaining knowledge and experience in the bond underwriting process.
Responsibilities:
- Under close supervision, assists in analyzing and underwriting contract and commercial surety accounts which includes analysis of financial statements, work in progress reports, and overall credit worthiness
- Shadows experienced underwriters to gain an understanding of the necessary information required to make decisions on approving or declining a bond request
- Reviews and learns the proper documentation required to keep account files current
- Uses and gains an understanding of the various bond forms and terminology
- Works within various computer applications to properly research and underwrite a bond
- Researches the bond manual and other sources to further develop knowledge on EMC bond underwriting processes
- References bond systems to research and utilize prior bond underwriting to maintain consistency standards for similar bond underwriting criteria
- Attends agency visits with the bond team members to gain an understanding of the independent agency system
- Attends contractor visits with the bond team members to understand the necessary information to gather, proper approach in asking questions, and gain an overall comfort level meeting with contractors
- Reviews surety bond manuals
- Attends the NAIS underwriting school
- Participates in industry functions, meetings, and seminars
- Keeps current on trade publications and business journals
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in accounting, finance, or business, or equivalent relevant experience
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong multitasking and organizational skills
- Strong computer and keyboarding skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Good human relation skills, including written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with others, as well as independently
- Occasional travel required; a valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if driving
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the insurance, banking, or construction industry preferred
