Narrative Design Intern (Paid)

About the position: 

E-Line Media is looking for a Narrative Design Intern (Paid) to join one of our production teams working on a currently unannounced project (more details to be provided after signing an NDA).  As the Narrative Design Intern you will help our team achieve the vision of our game by creating compelling, evocative NPC dialogue and player objectives. You will also be a contributor to the growth, culture, and ultimate success of the project and studio.  That last statement makes it seem pretty stressful, but we’re actually a rather low-key team.

Although E-Line’s headquarters are in Phoenix, the position and team are remote. The workload would be 20-40 hours per week (preferably full time, but we're flexible as it is an internship). It is 3 months in length, based on the candidate’s schedule. It is open to candidates from the US, Canada, Central, and South America (due to time zone restrictions). 

As our Narrative Design Intern, you will...

• Work closely with the team to create narrative content that supports systemic gameplay, improves systemic readability, and reinforces the tone of the game.
• Write and iterate on in-game text such as barks, tooltips, tutorials, event text, NPC dialogue, and other reactive narrative content.
• Collaborate with design to help define narrative framing for campaign levels and game systems.
• Help build and maintain narrative pipelines: writing guidelines, voice/tone references, content organization, and documentation to keep things consistent as the game grows.
• Participate in playtests and reviews, responding to feedback and polishing content for clarity, pacing, humor, and emotional impact.

We’re looking for someone who has…

• Strong writing skills with an emphasis on clarity, tone control, and humor.
• An interest in how narrative supports (and is supported by) game systems and player choice.
• The ability to provide and receive critical feedback professionally.
• A writing portfolio with varied examples (games preferred, but not required).
• Complete or near complete undergraduate college experience in a writing/design-related subject, completion of an intensive training program, or equivalent experience.

It’s a bonus if you…

• Have experience with interactive fiction tools, scripting, branching dialogue, or narrative implementation workflows.
• Have experience with Unreal Engine.
• Love the idea of bringing new voices, perspectives, and ideas into your work.
• Enjoy working with a team that takes its craft seriously but its meetings less so.
