SUMMARY
The Crisis Counselor provides compassionate, trauma-informed crisis intervention and support to individuals affected by domestic violence. This position serves as a first point of contact for clients seeking assistance through the agency's crisis hotline, Lethality Assessment Program (LAP), and other crisis response services. The Advocate conducts risk and needs assessments, provides safety planning, coordinates referrals, and collaborates with law enforcement, community partners, and internal programs to connect clients with comprehensive services. The role also requires accurate documentation, data collection, and adherence to agency policies, quality standards, and confidentiality requirements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Crisis Intervention and Client Support
• Respond promptly to all incoming crisis hotline, Lethality Assessment Program (LAP), and other crisis calls during assigned office hours.
• Assess immediate danger, safety concerns, and client needs using trauma-informed, strength-based, and survivor-centered practices.
• Develop individualized safety plans and provide emotional support, crisis intervention, and information to clients experiencing domestic violence.
• Implement LAP protocols in collaboration with the Stamford, Norwalk, Westport, Weston, Wilton, Darien, New Canaan Police Departments, and the Connecticut State Police.
• Ensure all LAPs are completed and documented in EmpowerDB before completing each shift.
• Conduct comprehensive needs assessments and provide warm referrals to agency programs, including:
• Criminal and civil legal advocacy
• Individual and group counseling
• Children and youth services
• Emergency shelter
• Financial and housing advocacy
• Other supportive services
• Assess clients for emergency shelter eligibility in collaboration with residential staff using established shelter intake procedures.
• Assist clients in navigating social service, legal, and criminal justice systems to promote safety, stability, and long-term independence.
• Collaborate with CCADV staff, member programs, community organizations, and multidisciplinary partners to ensure coordinated client care.
Administrative Responsibilities
• Create shift summary a of hotline updates at the completion of every completed shift.
• Review the daily Crisis Report distributed by DVCC staff to remain informed of active and potential crisis cases.
• Complete timely, accurate, and confidential documentation of all client contacts, interventions, referrals, and follow-up activities, submitting required documentation by 9:00 a.m. on the next business day.
• Maintain client records and service data within EmpowerDB and ensure accurate statistical reporting by the completion of every shift.
• Adhere to agency documentation standards, policies, procedures, and confidentiality requirements.
• Monitor and support agency performance metrics while delivering consistent, high-quality client services.
• Participate in quarterly After-Hours Hotline Counselor meetings and other required agency meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.
• When unable to work a scheduled shift, make reasonable efforts to secure coverage from another Hotline Counselor, with approval from the Director of Residential Services or the Asst. Director of Residential Services.
• Stay informed about best practices, emerging trends, and community resources related to domestic violence intervention and victim services.
• Support the organization's mission, values, policies, and strategic goals through professional conduct and collaborative teamwork.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience providing crisis intervention, victim advocacy, case management, or related human services.
• Knowledge of domestic violence dynamics, trauma-informed care, safety planning, and survivor-centered advocacy.
• Ability to conduct risk assessments, manage crisis situations, and make sound decisions under pressure.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accurate documentation.
• Proficiency in database management and Microsoft Office applications; experience with EmpowerDB or similar case management systems preferred.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with law enforcement, community partners, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Flexibility to work assigned shifts, including participation in after-hours hotline coverage as required.

Shift Definitions
Rate of Pay
Weekday Shift: Monday-Thursday 5pm-9am and Friday 5pm-
9am
Shift rate: $100.00
Weekend Shift: Saturdays and Sundays 9am-9am (24 hours)
Shift rate: $175.00
Holiday Shift: YWCA holidays 9am-9am (24 hours)
Shift rate: $200.00
Staff members will receive the shift rate for each date they are on call. In addition, an hourly rate of $17.00 will be paid for any time on active calls and client response.
