Head of Data (Maternity Cover) at Doccla in London, England, GB

🌍 A Bit About Us

At Doccla we’re redefining where and how healthcare is delivered.

We made our name as the UK’s leading provider of Virtual Wards designed to help hospitals discharge patients sooner and to care for them safely at home. Now Doccla is investing in technology-enabled proactive care to prevent people from unnecessary hospitalisation at a scale that can have a meaningful impact.

We provide everything clinicians need to deliver safe, effective Virtual Care across the full acuity spectrum, under one managed service. That spans Virtual Wards, helping hospitals discharge patients sooner and care for them safely at home, and Proactive Care, preventing unnecessary hospitalisation for the highest-risk patients in the community. Behind both sits a CQC-regulated clinical team, medical-grade devices, logistics, patient onboarding, EHR integration, and an AI-powered care platform built around real-world workflows.

We currently work with over 60% of NHS ICBs and support health systems across the UK, Ireland and the DACH region to reduce hospital pressure, improve outcomes, and create a more resilient model of care.

We're backed by top European investors, having secured £35m in Series B funding led by Lakestar, with participation from Elaia, General Catalyst, Speedinvest, and Bertelsmann.

🚀 Why Join Us?

This is your chance to join Doccla at a key stage in our growth.

We’re building the category leader in Virtual Care and Remote Patient Monitoring. You’ll be part of a highly entrepreneurial, mission-driven team that combines expertise across clinical, technical, commercial, and operational domains.

We’re solving real problems for patients and health systems and growing fast.

📊 The Role: Head of Data (Maternity Cover)

We're looking for an experienced data leader to take the helm of Doccla's data function on a fixed-term basis. You'll start in January 2027 and work alongside our current Head of Data for a handover period before taking full ownership from March 2027.

This is not a caretaker role. Doccla is at a pivotal stage in its growth, and data is central to how we design our services, work with NHS partners and demonstrate the impact of our care. We need someone who can lead from day one and bring a fresh perspective.

You'll lead a team of analysts and engineers, be the senior data voice in commercial discussions with NHS partners, and own how we measure and evidence outcomes. You'll need to be credible in the room with senior NHS leaders and clinicians, and equally credible peer reviewing the technical work of the team.

Contract: Fixed-term maternity cover, approximately 14 months, with a January 2027 start.

Location: Hybrid, at least twice a week at our London HQ. Some travel to NHS partner sites.

🧑‍⚕️ What You’ll Do as a Head of Data

Impact and outcomes

• Shape value-based contracts. Lead the data input to partnerships with NHS organisations, defining robust outcome measures and baselines.
• Own evaluation. Design and deliver robust evaluations of our services using quasi-experimental methods, and present results to commissioners and external reviewers.
• Build a sustainable and scalable evaluation capability across the team

Data acquisition and population health

• Build and maintain data sharing partnerships with NHS organisations, within UK GDPR and NHS information governance.
• Set population health strategy. Partner with clinical and product leadership on population health strategy.

Leading the data function

• Lead and develop the team. Set priorities, line manage and support each person's growth.
• Own technical standards. Review data models and pull requests, uphold modelling standards in our dbt project and wider data strategy, and make sound calls on architecture and tooling across our modern cloud data stack.
• Provide senior oversight. Own data quality and incident response in a live clinical service.
• Be the senior data voice. Represent data at leadership level, set priorities against business goals, and say no clearly when needed.

✅ What Experience You’ll Bring to the Team

Must have

• 7+ years in healthcare data, analytics or population health, including at least 2 years leading a team of analysts and engineers.
• Hands-on experience of health economics and value-based care, including measuring the financial impact of healthcare interventions.
• Designed and delivered evaluations of healthcare interventions using quasi-experimental methods, with results used in commercial or commissioning decisions.
• Deep familiarity with healthcare data, such as claims, EHR or hospital activity data (e.g. SUS, HES), and clinical coding (ICD-10, SNOMED CT).
• Experience of risk stratification and population health analytics.
• Strong SQL and working knowledge of analytics engineering (dbt or similar), enough to review code and challenge technical decisions.
• Excellent communication, from board-level narrative with NHS executives to detailed working sessions with analysts and clinicians.

Nice to have

• Direct experience of securing and working with NHS data: data sharing agreements, DPIAs, and NHS controlled environments.
• Experience of NHS commissioning and ICB decision making.
• Experience in a health-tech start-up or scale-up, ideally in a CQC-regulated or clinical setting.
• Modern data stack experience, such as cloud data warehouses, dbt and BI tooling.
• Data science experience: building and validating predictive models in healthcare, such as risk prediction, using Python or R, with an understanding of causal inference.

💡 What We’re Looking For

• A true leader who can step in, earn trust quickly and run the function without heavy oversight.
• Someone who brings new ideas, not just continuity, while respecting what's already working.
• Commercial judgement: you understand how data informs business decisions, and you hold the line on rigour.
• A coach who grows people, matching support to each person's needs.
• Comfort with ambiguity and pace in a fast-growing company.
