Law and Motion Associate | Hybrid, California | $130,000 to $185,000 plus bonus

A pocket brief is supposed to fit in a pocket. Whose pocket has never been settled, and the last one I saw would have needed a coat with pockets the size of a pillowcase. It won the point before lunch, mind, which is the only measurement anybody cares about.

This is the team that writes those. They sit behind every trial lawyer in the firm, across all the practice areas, so one week it’s a premises case and the next it’s a police matter or a trucking file. It pays $130,000 to $185,000 plus bonus, it’s hybrid with part of the week at home, and you can be based at any of their California offices.

You’d get appeals of your own, and the chance to stand up and argue them, learning from lawyers who’ve done a lot of it.

What you’d be doing:

• Demurrers, motions to strike, discovery motions and summary judgment, both filing and opposing
• Motions in limine, trial briefs, jury instructions and verdict forms
• Post trial work, new trial motions and fee motions
• Writs and appeals
• Research and recommendations for the trial lawyers on the odd legal question that decides a case

What you’d need:

• 2 years or more in practice, admitted in California
• Writing you’re proud of. Law review, a clerkship or an externship all help, and so does time as a criminal defense lawyer, oddly enough
