Academic Support Specialist
General Description
The position is responsible for specific tasks as well as general support of the Academic Team. The Academic Counselor will support students in their academic development by providing personalized guidance and support in selecting courses, addressing academic challenges, and achieving educational goals. The counselor will work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and families to foster a positive academic environment, helping students reach their full potential throughout their K-12 education.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Academic Support and Advising
Provide individual and group counseling to students regarding academic planning, goal setting, and course selection.
Assist students in identifying and addressing academic difficulties and barriers to success.
Work with students to develop academic skills such as time management, study strategies, and test-taking techniques.
Collaborate with teachers to monitor student progress and recommend interventions or support services as needed.
Course and Program Guidance
Advise students on appropriate course selection to meet graduation requirements, college entrance requirements, and personal interests.
Help students explore and identify career pathways, college options, and post-secondary opportunities.
Assist in planning and preparing for standardized testing and college admissions, including SAT/ACT and other assessments.
Collaboration and Communication
Work closely with faculty, parents, and administration to support student success and address academic or behavioral concerns.
Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding students' academic progress, recommendations for support, and educational milestones.
Facilitate communication between students and support staff (e.g., tutors, learning specialists) to ensure holistic support.
Data and Reporting
Track and report on student progress toward graduation and academic achievement.
Collect and analyze student data to identify trends and areas of improvement or intervention.
Complete Title compliance documentation in a timely manner.
Prepare reports on academic counseling activities, interventions, and student outcomes.
