If you are a CNM, or an ADON who has outgrown the setting you are in, this post at Cuan Chaitriona Nursing Home in Castlebar is worth a conversation.

Why this one is different

Most ADON roles are a straight long-stay caseload. This one isn't. Cuan Chaitriona is registered for 58 residents aged 18 and over, across respite, convalescence, short-stay and long-term care — with dependency levels from low right through to maximum. On any given week you are supporting general care of the older person alongside dementia care, palliative care, acquired brain injury and physical disability.

That mix keeps clinical practice sharp. It also means your assessment, care planning and risk management skills get used properly, rather than sitting idle.

You will deputise as Person in Charge

In the Director of Nursing's absence, you hold the PIC role under the Health Act 2007 and the HIQA standards. For anyone with an eye on a DON post, that is the experience that actually gets you there — not another year of the same.

The team reporting to you

CNM, staff nurses, activities co-ordinator, senior healthcare assistant, and an on-site physiotherapist. A physio inside the building, not one you wait three weeks for, changes what you can do for residents after a fall or a decline.

The environment

52 single and four twin bedrooms, every one of them en-suite. Three day rooms, two dining rooms, an oratory, a dedicated activity room, and three internal courtyards residents can reach from several points in the building. It is a home built so that people can actually get outside — which matters more to your residents, and to your job satisfaction, than any line on a job spec.

If you are commuting into a city for work at the moment, look at what a Mayo base does for your week. Castlebar is a working town with everything on the doorstep, thirty minutes from Westport and the coast, and a fraction of the housing cost of Dublin or Galway. People move here and stop counting hours in traffic.

What we are looking for

• Registered General Nurse on the NMBI live register
• Post Graduate Diploma in Gerontology (desired)
• Minimum three years' post-registration experience, including at least one year at CNM level in Care of the Older Person
• A leader people want to follow — calm, visible on the floor, and straight with staff and families
