Job Description
Summary: Coherent Corp. is a global leader in lasers, engineered materials and networking components. They are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Engineering Intern to join their Thin Film Engineering team for Summer 2026, where the intern will gain hands-on experience in building and wiring vacuum coating machines and doing process development.
Responsibilities:
- The right candidate will perform mechanical assembly and wiring of a new coating chamber. This person will also be working with the process development team
- The person needs to be hands on and mechanically inclined
- There will be interdepartmental interactions for building and validation of the equipment
- Use of hand tools, shop tools, electrical testing tools as well as spectrophotometers, computers and engineering software will be expected
- Light lifting of more than than 30ibs will be required on occasion
- A detailed final presentation will be expected at the end of the summer
Required Qualifications:
- Some College degree level
- Pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree or Electrical Engineering
- Hands-on experience in light fabrication
- Ability to make 2-D CAD drawings
- Use of hand tools and light shop equipment
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Team-oriented but able to work independently when needed
- Adaptable and eager to learn in a fast-paced environment
- Attention to detail and time management
- Perform mechanical assembly and wiring of a new coating chamber
