Job Description
Summary: City of Sarasota is seeking a Summer Intern in their Information Technology department. The IT Intern will support day-to-day technical operations, hardware preparation, inventory management, and basic end-user support while learning how an IT department functions.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with imaging, deploying, and setting up new workstations
- Perform basic hardware troubleshooting (peripherals, connectivity, startup issues)
- Organize and maintain IT storage areas, including labeling and cable management
- Help track and update asset inventory via Excel (laptops, monitors, accessories)
- Support onboarding activities such as preparing equipment for new hires
- Assist in maintaining documentation, guides, and inventory records
- Shadow IT staff on system administration, projects, and daily tasks
- Participate in special IT projects as needed (network closet cleanup, device lifecycle tasks)
Required Qualifications:
- Education and experience equivalent to a junior or senior in high school or attending college or vocational school
- Interest in computer hardware, networking, or IT support
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
- Basic understanding of Windows/Mac systems
- Ability to follow procedures and work independently with guidance
- Good communication and customer service skills
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
- Ability to plan, organize, and implement action with reference to assignments
- Ability to communicate ideas, both verbally and in writing, with clarity and precision
- Ability to maintain accurate and comprehensive records of activities
- Ability to adapt to changing assignments and a varying workload which may be inherent in the orientation to any given science, discipline, or municipal operation
- Ability to effectively participate in such work as may be required
- Ability to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to perform the assigned position, in accordance with the standards set by both the Department Head and the educational institution
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, superiors, officials of the City, and the general public
