Summary: The City of Dallas is seeking a Police Research Specialist to join their team dedicated to service and community. The role involves accessing and analyzing criminal suspect and offense information, forecasting trends, and preparing reports to assist in crime prevention efforts. Responsibilities: - Gathers, compiles, and manages criminal offenses and suspect information by operating microcomputer and mainframe terminal; advises subordinates and supervisors of criminal suspect and offense trend; performs research, analyzes data, and makes recommendations for suppression of crime - Formulates, drafts, and prepares appropriate criminal offense/suspect information; effectively uses and applies knowledge of software, data, and spreadsheet programs to delivery accurate summary reports - Conducts, performs, and prepares analyses of criminal offenses, suspect data, special crime reports, and graphics data in order to furnish crime statistical data to appropriate personnel - Informs and communicates with community groups and apartment managers to disclose crime trends and present recommendations for reducing crime problems - Prepares, drafts, and creates offense and suspect trend analysis to forecast probable criminal offense and suspect trends - Maintains plot maps of Part I offenses to display concentration and general trends of offenses - Maintains bureau file of offense and suspect data computer printouts and security of all computers in bureau to prevent unauthorized entry - Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned Required Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree (or higher) in a criminology, geography, math, management information systems (MIS) or computer science field - One (1) year of combined experience in criminal/investigative research in a law enforcement environment AND/OR ESRI/ArcGIS experience which included analyzing statistical data - Must pass an intensive background investigation and drug test - No FELONY or Class A MISDEMEANOR convictions - No Class B MISDEMEANOR convictions within the last ten (10) years - No family violence convictions - Cannot currently be on deferred adjudication for any FELONY, Class A, or Class B MISDEMEANOR Preferred Qualifications: - Knowledge of research and classification principles and techniques - Knowledge of computer software and database - Basic understanding of principles, laws and methods of research or classification of police intelligence information - Ability identify emerging trends, organize law enforcement operations, and plan crime-prevention strategies - Ability to understand the relationship of incidents within an investigation - Ability to relate well to police officers and others - Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing - Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees, and the general public - Experience writing, reviewing, or editing reports, or analyzing information in a law enforcement environment for offense elements - Experience with Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) and National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) is preferred Required Skills: Criminal research, Data analysis, ESRI/ArcGIS Important Skills: Research principles, Computer software, Database management Nice-to-Have Skills: Effective communication, Relationship building Benefits: Competitive benefits, Growth opportunities, Vibrant work culture
