Job Description
Summary: The City of Austin is a vibrant community dedicated to shaping one of the nation's most dynamic cities. They are seeking an IT Intern to assist in general administrative or research functions related to the energy industry, providing a unique opportunity to gain experience in various fields such as Computer Science and Information Technology.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in general administrative or research functions to develop a working knowledge of a targeted area in municipal government
- Work side by side with professionals on critical projects to gain experience in the energy industry
- Complete unique project(s) during the internship and give a formal presentation describing the project and outcomes
Required Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent
- Enrolled in an accredited college or university degree program, with some advanced coursework related to the internship program
- Must be enrolled full-time and classified as Junior, Senior, Graduate student or recent graduate within the last year (May 2025 - current) of an accredited university or college
- Must have completed a minimum of 60 college semester hours
- Must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale as an undergrad, post grad or recent grad
- A copy of your current official/unofficial transcript will be required
- The City of Austin employment application is an official document; incomplete applications will not be considered
- Must commit to working Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm in the office from June 1, 2026, through July 24, 2026
Preferred Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree or certificate in Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field
- Basic knowledge of AI and machine learning concepts gained through coursework, self‑study, or projects
- Familiarity with common AI tools or platforms (such as Python libraries, cloud AI services, or API‑based AI tools)
- Ability to follow technical procedures for tool setup, configuration, and troubleshooting
- Experience completing at least one academic or personal project involving data analysis, scripting, or the use of AI‑related tools
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with attention to detail during testing and documentation
- Ability to communicate findings clearly and work collaboratively with technical and non‑technical team members
- Currently pursuing a degree or certificate in Information Technology, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Business Analytics, or a related field
- Basic knowledge of data analysis concepts, including data cleaning, transformation, and interpretation
- Familiarity with data visualization principles and the ability to create simple charts or dashboards using Tableau or Power BI (class projects or self‑study acceptable)
- Foundational skills in working with structured data, such as Excel, CSV files, or introductory SQL
- Ability to follow established processes for preparing datasets and building reports
- Strong attention to detail and ability to document analysis steps and visualization choices
- Effective communication skills to present findings to technical and non‑technical team members
