Job Description
Summary: Cherokee Federal is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented IT Security Intern to partner with enterprise security and infrastructure teams. The intern will gain experience in executing security hardening efforts across the organization while developing both technical cybersecurity capabilities and professional skills through hands-on exposure to enterprise-level security operations.
Responsibilities:
- Review and analyze email security threats, assisting with investigation, categorization, and recommended remediation actions
- Support analysis of internal and external security advisories to identify potential impact to enterprise systems and recommend appropriate mitigation steps
- Assist in maintaining Active Directory hygiene, including review of privileged access, stale accounts, and adherence to security best practices
- Validate enforcement and effectiveness of security controls across Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, DLP Sensitivity Labels, and related platforms
- Support monitoring and review of Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) alerts and related security tooling
- Participate in security hardening initiatives by identifying configuration gaps and assisting with remediation activities
- Submit and track Requests for Change (RFCs) within internal change management systems to support security improvements
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Infrastructure, IT Operations, and Security teams to implement and validate security enhancements
- Lead a defined 10-week Security Hardening project aligned to departmental priorities, delivering measurable improvements to the organization’s cybersecurity posture
- Document findings, process improvements, and business impact of security initiatives to support governance, audit readiness, and continuous improvement
- Present project outcomes, key learnings, and business impact to Security and IT Leadership during the final week of the internship
Required Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field
- Demonstrated interest in information security operations, cybersecurity governance, or infrastructure security
- Foundational understanding of cybersecurity principles including threat detection, access management, vulnerability management, and risk mitigation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess risk and identify root causes
- Ability to interpret technical documentation and security advisories
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document findings and present technical information clearly
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within cross-functional teams
- High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with Microsoft technologies such as Active Directory and Microsoft 365
- Exposure to email security platforms, endpoint security, network security concepts, or Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS)
