Job Description
Summary: The City of Charlotte is a diverse and inclusive community, and Charlotte Water is seeking a motivated Chemistry major for a summer internship focused on water and wastewater treatment operations. This hands-on role offers exposure to laboratory analysis and plant operations, ideal for students interested in applying chemistry in an environmental setting.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with routine lab work, including sampling, testing, and data recording to support water quality and regulatory compliance
- Rotate through treatment facilities to gain an understanding of process control, system optimization, and daily plant operations
- Provide exposure to biosolids and residuals management, including land application practices
- Learn about application rates, as well as the fundamentals of soil health and crop science as they relate to environmental stewardship
- Performs other related job duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a closely related field
- Completed coursework in general chemistry; additional coursework in environmental, analytical, or organic chemistry preferred
- Valid driver's license
- Must provide own means of transportation to and from the job site
- Basic knowledge of chemical principles, laboratory techniques, and safety practices
- Interest in water/wastewater treatment processes and environmental systems
- Ability to collect, record, and interpret data with attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures and safety guidelines
- Willingness to learn, ask questions, and adapt in a hands-on environment
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional coursework in environmental, analytical, or organic chemistry
