Job Description
WHO WE ARE
For over 20 years, Caravel Law has pioneered a different kind of law firm in Canada.
Our lawyers combine Big Law training with in-house experience, and embed directly with clients to deliver sophisticated, business-minded counsel without the overhead, hierarchy, or billable hours targets of traditional firms.
We work alongside General Counsel, the C-suite, and founders to build scalable legal capacity where and when it is needed. We don’t measure success in hours billed. We measure it in deals closed, risks avoided and businesses built. At Caravel, you can design your work around your life, while laying the foundation for a meaningful, rewarding career.
WHY CARAVEL
Control over your practice. Full-time or reduced schedule, your call. No billable hour targets, no lockstep, no partnership tournament, and compensation that reflects the work you do.
Work at your level. Senior mandates and direct client contact, without the internal machinery that dilutes both.
Focus on the work. Business development, marketing, conflicts, engagement management, and billing are handled. You practice; we run the firm.
A strong community. Work with peers who bring some of the strongest in-house and law firm experience in the country, and a supportive team dedicated to the success, connection, and well-being of every lawyer at the firm.
A firm built to innovate. We offer a dedicated legal innovation function and AI-enabled delivery, because our clients expect us to be ahead of them.
Strong trajectory. Two decades in, Caravel is growing faster than at any point in its history, with a national bench and sophisticated client engagements that keep expanding.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TEAM
Experience
A law degree.
Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
A minimum of ten (10) years of legal practice experience.
The ability to give a clear, business-driven answer under time pressure and stand behind it.
Comfort operating with autonomy. Our lawyers are independent by design and run their own mandates.
Specialized Expertise
Independently manage and carry complex employment and labour matters from inception through resolution, advising clients on litigation strategy, risk management, settlement, and practical business objectives.
Advise corporate clients on a broad range of employment matters, including hiring, compensation and benefits, discipline, terminations, severance, reductions in force, workplace policies, and strategies for managing employment-related risk and compliance under applicable British Columbia and federal legislation.
Lead employment and labour litigation and administrative proceedings, including wrongful dismissal actions and employment disputes before the Supreme Court of Alberta, Alberta Court of Appeal, Alberta Human Rights Tribunal, Alberta Labour Relations Board, and other courts, tribunals, and administrative bodies.
Develop and execute effective litigation and dispute-resolution strategies, including independently preparing for and conducting examinations for discovery, applications and motions, mediations, pre-trial conferences, hearings, and settlement negotiations, including in complex and multi-party matters.
Draft legal and advocacy materials, including pleadings, chambers applications and motion materials, legal opinions, written submissions, settlement materials, employment and secondment agreements, termination documentation, workplace policies, and other materials requiring strong legal analysis and strategic judgment.
Location
- Alberta. Remote elsewhere in Canada is also acceptable.
If you feel that your background and experience would be a good fit for this role, we would love to hear from you. We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only candidates under consideration will be contacted.
