Join our Team and advance your career as a Staff Software Engineer
bp’s Technology organization is the central organization for all software and platform development. We build all the technology that powers bp’s businesses, from upstream energy production to downstream energy delivery to our customers. We have a variety of teams depending on your areas of interest, including infrastructure and backend services through to customer-facing web and native applications. We encourage our teams to adapt quickly by using native AWS and Azure services, including serverless, and enable them to pick the best technology for a given problem. This is meant to empower our software and platform engineers while allowing them to learn and develop themselves.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the software solutions and services that power our technology platforms. In this role, you will lead a team of engineers and partners to ensure that the software is highly available, scalable, and secure. You will also be responsible for developing features, improving the software performance, and providing technical support to other teams.
In this role You will:
Design and deliver scalable software components, services, and platforms, producing and iterating on high-quality design documentation
Lead end-to-end delivery to production using procedures (clean code, testing, CI/CD pipelines) to maintain high velocity
Integrate with distributed systems and shared APIs, partnering with teams to drive reusability, resilience, and system evolution
Collaborate multi-functionally with product, data, UX, and engineering teams to solve complex challenges
Mentor engineers, contribute to code reviews, and drive engineering standards and continuous improvement
Fix platform issues, ensure production stability, and support compliance through audits, controls, and risk mitigation
What You will need to be successful:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or equivalent experience, with the ability to rapidly adapt to new technologies, work independently or in teams, and solve complex problems through root cause analysis and creative solutions
Strong communicators able to engage, influence, and collaborate with partners from peers to senior leadership, while navigating ambiguity, managing risk, and driving outcomes as a self-starter
Solid years of software development experience (platform/service engineering) with mastery in at least one language (C#, Python, TypeScript or iOS), delivering secure, testable, maintainable code and robust cross-platform solutions
Deep expertise in system design and full SDLC standards (code reviews, CI/CD, source control, testing, operations), building and operating sophisticated, production-grade systems with strong focus on security, monitoring, logging, and reliability
Proven experience designing, scaling, and solving large-scale distributed systems on AWS or Azure, with strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure components (identity, networking, storage, databases, serverless containers) and production support (on-call environments)
Advanced database expertise across relational, graph, document, and key-value models, with strong data modeling, database design, and SQL proficiency
