Civil Engineer I (IL) at Bowman Consulting in Chicago, IL

Summary: Bowman Consulting is a collaborative engineering and infrastructure services firm focused on helping communities and clients develop sustainable, safe, and livable environments. The Civil Engineer I will support transportation engineering and planning projects through design development, analysis, field data collection, preparation of plans and reports, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities:
- Receive general instruction on key objectives for execution. Receive direction as needed, and especially on difficult assignments and possible solutions. Work is completed using standard engineering techniques and design principles and is reviewed by more senior staff to ensure application of sound professional judgement
- Work closely with more senior members to learn about and assist with transportation engineering and planning work
- Assist with the marketing of the firm’s capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships
- Coordinate with other disciplines and internal services/groups/offices as necessary
- Work with multi-discipline team to solve challenging transportation issues
- Supports design teams and project managers in a variety of preliminary engineering/concept development studies, contract plan preparation, through final stages of design and construction
- Does research on permitting and design criteria to assist in design development of the various roadway/highway and bridge improvement projects
- Prepare maps and graphics for public and client meetings, performs data analysis, perform field reviews and data collection, conduct research on trends and best practices, contribute to stakeholder and public engagement efforts, develop solutions to complex problems, and present recommendations
- Prepare engineering plans using standard design criteria
- Assist and support in the preparation of reports and preliminary plans based on project analyses and assessments
- Performs design computations, and develops quantity takeoffs
- Ability to work both in the field and in an office setting
- Draft transmittals, memos, meeting minutes, letters, and other documentation/communications
- Assist in the preparation of plans, specifications, construction schedules, cost estimates, permits and/or designs for projects
- Conduct field visits, field data collection, and field observations
- Develop and maintain accurate and organized project files
- Follow established firm’s goals, SOPs and QA/QC procedures and assist in the QA/QC review of technical work of other staff
- Work on various analyses and design aspects of engineering projects which may include road/access design, corridor projects, multimodal projects, bridge design, safety projects, and other associated engineering services
- Apply client-specific design criteria and ordinance requirements in the development of design engineering tasks
- Increase familiarity with OpenRoads designer in the preparation of engineering and design documents
- Assist with drainage and geometrics design development for roadway/highway improvement projects
- Prepare reports documenting findings and design criteria in alternatives development and engineering reports

Required Qualifications:
- * Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related engineering discipline required at time of employment
- * Engineer in Training certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
- * Entry level position; no prior experience required. Any professional experience is a plus
- * Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- * Knowledge of MicroStation and/or AutoCAD, or other engineering design software
- * Interest and/or familiarity with Department of Transportation (DOT): permitting agency and industry design; permitting and construction standards; and/or policies and procedures
- * Interest and/or familiarity with Federal and State ADA Standards and Guidelines

Preferred Qualifications:
- * Academic or internship experience in transportation discipline preferred
- * Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (EIT) preferred
- * Valid state driver's license and ability to successfully pass a motor vehicle check or reliable form of transportation to/from the office and/or project site strongly preferred
