Mechanical Engineering Intern at Boston Dynamics in Waltham, MA

Summary: Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, and they are seeking an ambitious Junior Engineer to join the Atlas Compute and Sensing Mechanical Engineering team. The Mechanical Engineering Intern will design mechanical parts and assemblies for the head of the robot, building and testing prototypes and running experiments to validate design improvements. Responsibilities: - Work within a multidisciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to design and support complex robotic systems - Plan and perform verification and validation testing on prototype and production systems - Think creatively about how to test systems for their mechanical, thermal, acoustic and shock/impact performance - Design and develop new and novel features for existing products - Troubleshoot issues, perform root cause failure analysis and design/implement corrective actions to sustain existing products - Design and release parts and assemblies using Catia CAD software - Develop and maintain product support documentation including bills of material (BOMs) and detailed part/assembly drawings - Support system design analyses, including reliability, DFM / DFA, cost-reduction Required Qualifications: - Current student enrolled in a Bachelor or Graduate Degree program in Mechanical Engineering or Robotics Engineering - Passion and interest for robotics and mechanical design - Strong desire to ship meaningful product that impacts the world - Experience using 3D CAD tools (Solidworks, CATIA, etc.) including simulations (FEA) and generation of detailed 2D drawings - High level of technical writing proficiency (specs, test plans, reports, white papers, etc.) Preferred Qualifications: - Experience with Python, LabView, or MATLAB - Experience designing injection molded plastic parts - Exposure to ASME drafting standards including GD&T (Y14.5-2018) - Demonstrated internship experience designing and developing mechanical parts and assemblies for product applications (consumer, industrial, medical) Required Skills: Mechanical Engineering, 3D CAD tools Important Skills: Robotics Engineering, Python
