Job Description
Summary: Blue Origin is working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems for the benefit of Earth. This role supports the development and operations of the New Glenn launch system, focusing on material challenges and manufacturing processes.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborating as part of a hardworking team to address material challenges in various spaceflight systems
- Reviewing production drawings for large, complex assemblies to ensure optimal material selection and process implementation
- Developing, documenting, and optimizing manufacturing processes for both metallic and non-metallic hardware
- Selecting materials and defining design requirements to meet engineering, structural, and program goals
- Working collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including quality, design, structures, thermal, integration, and manufacturing, to optimize overall system design and performance
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of a B.S. degree or higher in materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, polymer engineering, welding engineering, geology/geosciences and mining engineering or related field
- Will have earned their degree within the last year and able to start by Fall 2026
- Broad experience in: metallic materials such as super alloys, aluminums/ titanium and their associated processing (e.g. forging, casting, forming, brazing, welding, etc.); non-metallic (e.g. o-rings, seals, lubricants) hardware; material characterization and failure modes (corrosion, failure investigation, thermal degradation, etc.); breaking down complex problems into traceable tasks and concisely communicating project status
- Relevant internship/co-op and/or hands-on experience that demonstrate development of both technical skills as well as leadership qualities
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team on rapid development programs
- Flexible and adaptable mindset
- Self-driven with the ability to seek out requirements with minimal direction
Preferred Qualifications:
- MS in materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, polymer engineering, welding engineering, geology/geosciences and mining engineering or related technical subject area
- Familiarity with standard methods for testing mechanical properties (including fatigue, fracture, creep, stress rupture) of metallic and soft materials
- Familiarity and interest in at least one of the following areas: friction stir welding and spin forming; mining and geophysical exploration; metallurgy and how it relates to processes such as casting and forging; metallic additive manufacturing (laser power bed) and its application to production hardware
