Job Description
We are seeking an Engineer I to support the Optical Testing Facility (OTF), performing and owning spectral and optical measurements while also applying engineering-level analysis to the data generated. You will work with optical
components integrated into complex space-based and airborne sensors for NASA, commercial, and DoW markets. This role covers the full scope of lab measurement work — spectrophotometry, FTIR, handling, and inspection — plus the engineering analysis, documentation, and design interpretation that sits above it. We're looking for someone with a conceptual grasp of optical measurement principles and the aptitude to quickly build hands-on proficiency, who can also interpret results against design intent, identify anomalies, and feed findings back to the broader engineering team.

What You’ll Do:
- Optical Test Laboratory & Spectral Measurements:
- Perform spectral transmission and reflectance measurements of optical components and coatings using UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometers.
- Prepare samples, configure measurement fixtures, and set up instruments for spectral testing, including new and non-standard configurations.
- Run calibration checks and reference standards to verify instrument performance before measurements.
- Record, reduce, and analyze measurement data using engineering-level analysis techniques and software.
- Compare measured spectral data against component specifications; independently assess out-of-family results and determine root cause.
- Operate additional optical measurement equipment, for example, measuring microscopes, profilometers, interferometers, and scatterometers.
- Maintain and calibrate the optical test laboratory and associated equipment, including troubleshooting system-level, process-level, and instrument-level issues.
- Optical Handling, Inspection & Cleaning:
- Handle delicate optical components per company processes, maintaining cleanliness and contamination control standards.
- Conduct optical inspection per company processes and commercial standards, including Scratch-Dig measurements and dimensional measurements.
- Perform cleaning of optical components per company processes and commercial standards.
- Review vendor data packages for incoming optical components and disposition non-conformances.
- Engineering Analysis & Design Interpretation:
- Apply engineering-level analysis to spectral, wavefront, and dimensional data to assess performance against design requirements and specifications.
- Interpret interferometric wavefront error data, including Zernike decomposition, to evaluate optical performance and support alignment convergence.
- Support stray light analysis using scatterometry and BRDF measurements collected in the lab.
- Develop and refine test procedures, measurement setups, and acceptance criteria for new or evolving optical characterization needs.
- Read and interpret optical component and assembly drawings and specifications, including GD&T callouts, to guide test planning and disposition decisions.
- Support root cause analysis for measurement anomalies, coating non-conformances, and out-of-family results; recommend corrective actions.
- Contribute engineering input to alignment budgets and error analyses in coordination with senior engineers and technologists.
- Documentation & Teamwork:
- Produce data packages, technical reports, and performance summaries using Microsoft Office tools and custom systems.
- Input required information into electronic build records in accordance with company processes.
- Author and maintain test procedures, measurement work instructions, and systems engineering reports, ensuring documentation reflects current best practices.
- Present technical findings, anomaly dispositions, and measurement results to engineers, technologists, and program leadership.
- Work in a collaborative environment with optics personnel, engineers, and technicians to test and characterize components for state-of-the-art optical systems.
- Participate in design reviews and technical exchanges with optical, mechanical, and systems engineering teams.
- Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
- May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
- May access other facilities in various weather conditions.
