POSITION SUMMARY
The HVAC Piping Quality Control Inspector is the trade-specific inspection, verification, and documentation resource for HVAC piping work. The role independently verifies that installations comply with contract documents, approved submittals, manufacturer requirements, applicable codes, and B&I quality standards. The Inspector documents deficiencies, confirms corrective-action closure, supports field coaching, and helps prepare systems for testing, commissioning, and turnover. Field leadership remains accountable for installation quality and correction of deficient work.
QUALITY STRATEGY AND ROLE BOUNDARIES
- QC verifies and coaches. The Inspector evaluates readiness and conformance, documents objective findings, and provides technical guidance.
- Operations owns execution. Superintendents and Foremen direct installation activities and are accountable for correcting identified deficiencies.
- Project Management enables the process. Project Managers support scheduling, access, documentation, and closure of project-level requirements.
- The Regional QC Manager coordinates regional execution, consistency, workload, reporting, and escalation. The HVAC Piping Manager maintains direct trade ownership and technical alignment.
- Dedicated or shared project coverage is assigned based on project risk, complexity, contractual requirements, and workload.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Inspection and Verification
- Perform routine, first-work, milestone, pre-concealment, and readiness inspections for HVAC piping systems and equipment connections.
- Verify installation against current drawings, specifications, approved submittals, RFIs/ASIs, coordinated models, manufacturer instructions, and applicable codes.
- Inspect hydronic, condenser-water, refrigerant, equipment piping, supports, valves, specialties, access clearances, identification, insulation readiness, cleanliness, and related trade interfaces.
- Apply required inspection checkpoints and hold points before concealment, insulation, startup, testing, or turnover when acceptance criteria have not been met.
- Coordinate inspection timing with the Superintendent, Foreman, Project Manager, and Regional QC Manager.
ACC Documentation and Corrective Action
- Complete assigned trade-specific QC checklists and inspection records in Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) at the point of work.
- Create deficiencies in ACC with a clear description, exact location, responsible party, due date, supporting photo, and drawing or sheet reference when applicable.
- Track open deficiencies, verify completed corrective actions through reinspection, and close items only after conformance is confirmed.
- Maintain pressure-test, flushing, cleaning, weld/braze inspection, and other required quality records.
- Provide concise status updates on completed inspections, open issues, overdue corrections, recurring failure points, and emerging risks.
Preconstruction, Testing, Commissioning, and Turnover
- Participate in preconstruction QC alignment, constructability, coordination, and project kickoff reviews as assigned.
- Identify high-risk installations, project-specific inspection needs, and required quality checkpoints before work begins.
- Witness or verify required tests in accordance with project requirements and confirm complete, traceable test documentation.
- Support turnover and closeout by confirming required checklists, test reports, and deficiency closure are complete.
Coaching and Continuous Improvement
- Coach Foremen in the field on installation standards, checklist use, recurring failure points, and prevention of rework.
- Communicate recurring issues and lessons learned so standards, checklists, SOPs, and training can be improved.
- Maintain professional working relationships with project teams, customer representatives, inspectors, subcontractors, and commissioning partners.
- Escalate unresolved, repeated, or high-risk quality conditions through the established QC and operational leadership channels.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Five or more years of commercial HVAC piping field experience, including hydronic and mechanical piping systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of installation methods, materials, supports, valves, equipment connections, pressure testing, flushing, cleaning, and system readiness.
- Ability to read and interpret contract drawings, specifications, approved submittals, shop drawings, coordinated models, RFIs/ASIs, and manufacturer instructions.
- Ability to identify nonconforming work, communicate findings clearly, and verify corrective actions without assuming responsibility for directing the installation workforce.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365, iPad-based field tools, ACC, and digital photo/document management.
- Ability to travel to assigned project sites and work in active construction environments.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Quality control, Foreman, Superintendent, or field leadership experience.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- Relevant trade license, welding inspection credential, brazing qualification knowledge, or manufacturer training.
- Experience with Bluebeam, Procore, commissioning, startup, or turnover documentation.
CORE COMPETENCIES

- Accountability and objective documentation
- Clear communication and field coaching
- Planning, organization, and follow-through
- Collaboration and customer focus
- Problem solving and continuous improvement
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
