Job Description
Summary: The Austin American-Statesman is part of Hearst Newspapers, and they are seeking an Editorial AI Development Intern for the summer season. This role involves contributing hands-on engineering support to enhance editorial AI services and newsroom tools.
Responsibilities:
- Hands-on engineering support for our editorial AI initiatives
- Extending and hardening existing editorial AI services and APIs
- Prototyping newsroom-facing AI workflows (e.g., Slack-based alerts, utilities and reporting tools)
- Contributing to internal tooling that makes our development processes more repeatable and scalable
- Writing clear internal documentation to support adoption and maintainability
- Supporting experimentation and evaluation of AI-driven newsroom utilities
- Collaborate with team members on data-driven AI projects
- Learn how to create digital tools and experiences to make communities stronger and readers’ lives easier
Required Qualifications:
- Current Stanford University student
- Experience using Python to build or extend APIs and interact with remote services
- Familiarity with prompt design, evaluation workflows or AI product prototyping
- Understanding of RESTful services, JSON, and basic web architecture
- Working knowledge of Git and Github
- Experience in a modern newsroom (including student publications) or a related work environment
- Ability to self-manage and handle multiple projects and fast deadlines
- Comfort with Slack, Zoom and Google Sheets
Preferred Qualifications:
- Any experience with AI-integrated IDEs (Github Copilot, Cursor)
- Any experience with AWS systems such as S3, EC2, Lambda
