Job Description
Why this role exists
Acrew Dental builds software that helps dental practices organize, engage, and succeed—streamlining scheduling, patient communications, intake, billing, and portal experiences so teams can spend less time on admin work and more time delivering exceptional care. (acrewdental.com
)
We’re building like owners—because we are owners. This role is designed for a builder who wants more than a paycheck: you’ll have the opportunity to earn equity in the business through impact, execution, and sustained contribution. That means you’ll help shape the product, the roadmap, and the company—and you’ll share in the upside you create.
The Opportunity: Build, Lead, Earn Equity
This is not a “ticket-taker” engineering role. It’s an entrepreneurial seat for someone who wants to:
- Own outcomes, not just code
- Build core capabilities that drive growth and retention for practices
- Help define what we build next (and why)
- Be accountable for quality, speed, and business impact
- Earn equity as your impact compounds
What you’ll do
You’ll build and ship features end-to-end—from data model to UI—creating secure, reliable workflows that improve the patient experience and reduce friction for busy practices.
Product & engineering responsibilities
- Build full-stack features across patient-facing and practice-facing experiences (online scheduling, patient portal, intake forms, billing/payments, automated reminders, 2-way texting). (acrewdental.com
) - Design and maintain robust APIs/services that support workflow automation, scheduling logic, payments, communications, and account management.
- Deliver clean, intuitive interfaces that are easy for front-desk teams and patients to use.
- Integrate and maintain external systems/APIs that are core to the platform’s value (see “Tech Stack & Integrations” below).
- Collaborate closely with product, support, and dental operations to understand real clinic workflows and translate them into dependable software.
- Raise the bar on quality: testing, monitoring/observability, performance, and reliability.
- Participate in architecture decisions with a bias toward maintainability, clarity, and shipping.
Security, privacy, and trust
- Build with security and privacy as defaults: protect patient data, follow least-privilege access patterns, and treat compliance as a product feature. (acrewdental.com
) - Implement safeguards appropriate for patient-facing workflows (secure auth, role-based access, auditing/logging, incident readiness).
Tech Stack & Integrations (What you’ll work with)
You’ll work in (and help evolve) a production stack built on:
Core stack
- Node.js (14.17.0+)
- Express
- Vue 2
- MySQL
- Sequelize (ORM)
Key integrations
- Open Dental (core source of patient data)
- Authorize.Net (credit card payments)
- Twilio (text messaging)
- Mailgun (email delivery)
- Unlayer (email template editor)
- The app integrates with multiple API providers, so comfort with third-party APIs and webhooks is important.
How we work (what we value)
Our culture and clinical philosophy shape how we build:
- Patient Obsession: If it doesn’t improve the patient experience, we challenge it.
- Relationship Driven: We use technology to strengthen the human connection between practices and their communities.
- Golden Rule Care: We treat patients, customers, and teammates the way we’d want to be treated—especially under pressure.
- Ownership Mindset: We act like owners because we’re building something we believe in—and equity should reward real contribution.
- Clinical Excellence & Autonomy: Our software supports great care without dictating care decisions.
What success looks like (first 6–12 months)
- You ship meaningful improvements to scheduling/communications/portal workflows that reduce friction for practices and patients. (acrewdental.com
) - You take ownership of a key product area (e.g., Open Dental data workflows, messaging, payments, portal UX) and move it forward with minimal oversight.
- You improve reliability and observability so issues are found early and resolved quickly.
- You propose and execute roadmap ideas tied to growth and retention—not just feature output.
- Your contribution positions you to earn increasing equity as your impact grows.
Required qualifications
- 3+ years building and shipping production web applications as a full stack engineer.
- Experience building in JavaScript backends and modern web UIs; comfortable working across front end + back end.
- Experience with relational databases and ORMs (MySQL + Sequelize or similar).
- Experience integrating third-party APIs (payments, messaging, email) and handling edge cases reliably.
- Familiarity with secure development practices for systems handling sensitive customer/patient data.
- Proven ability to own features end-to-end and collaborate cross-functionally.
Nice-to-have
- Experience working with practice management systems (especially Open Dental) or healthcare-adjacent systems.
- Experience with payments flows (especially Authorize.Net), messaging deliverability (Twilio, Mailgun), and email templating tools (Unlayer).
- Comfort modernizing and evolving a mature codebase (Vue2 → future improvements, Node upgrades, performance refactors).
Compensation & Equity (Earned Ownership)
Compensation includes competitive pay plus a meaningful earned-equity path tied to contribution and business outcomes. We’re looking for someone who wants to build with an owner’s mindset—and be rewarded like an owner.
Equal opportunity
Ascendent Health Partners is an equal opportunity employer. We’re committed to creating a workplace where people are treated with respect, dignity, and fairness.
