Job Description
Summary: American Electric Power (AEP) is a dedicated energy company committed to delivering safe and reliable energy solutions. They are seeking a Transmission Planning Engineer who will perform advanced engineering work, including load flow analysis and congestion analysis, while providing guidance and support to lower-level employees.
Responsibilities:
- Ability to understand and perform load flow analysis, Congestion analysis, short circuit and other planning studies as needs arise
- Familiarity with tools such as PSS/E, PROMOD, TARA and Aspen are a plus
- Partake in competitive transmission windows as well as partake in congestion analysis for generation acquisition
- Conduct area wide studies to assess necessary system improvements to address any reliability deficiencies
- Perform investigative efforts into problem areas and communicate findings to the wider team and management
- Follows policies, practices, standards and rules of the company and those regulations and procedures required by external agencies
- Provides training and guidance to lower-level employees as needed
- Elevates issues to higher-level employees/leaders as appropriate
- Be heavily detail oriented and be a fastidious note taker
- Resolve and initiate solutions to routine problems which usually require additional definition/clarification before analysis can begin
- Demonstrate ability to identify problems that are beyond the normal routine
- Demonstrate ability and desire to seek out opportunities and embrace new ideas and approaches
- Communicate with teams of other disciplines and develop presentations to other teams/stakeholders
- Conduct clear and concise presentations
- Network with peers inside and outside the AEP system
- Identify key stakeholders and use informal network to get things done
- Resolve conflict and build consensus
- Make decisions subject to review within established standards, policies and procedures
- Demonstrate the ability to extrapolate beyond known facts to reach logical conclusions
- Communicate to management the scenarios they’re studying, and provide advice based on their results
- Understand AEP's organizational structure and the specific role and responsibility of their individual organizational unit
- Demonstrate an understanding of the budgeting and approval process
- Be proficient in the application and use of economic analysis techniques in problem solving
- Develop an understanding of utility regulation and financing
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET
- Ability to understand and perform load flow analysis, Congestion analysis, short circuit and other planning studies
- Familiarity with tools such as PSS/E, PROMOD, TARA and Aspen
- Ability to communicate findings to the wider team and management
- Detail oriented and fastidious note taker
- Ability to resolve and initiate solutions to routine problems
- Ability to identify problems that are beyond the normal routine
- Ability to communicate effectively and comfortably with peers
- Active team member and ability to network with peers
- Ability to make decisions subject to review within established standards, policies and procedures
- Understanding of AEP's organizational structure and specific role of their individual organizational unit
- Proficient in the application and use of economic analysis techniques in problem solving
Preferred Qualifications:
- Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination in preparation for future licensing as a Professional Engineer (PE)
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is encouraged and preferred
