Position Summary
The Microbiology Laboratory Assistant 1 (LA1) supports daily operations of the Microbiology department by performing routine laboratory tasks under direct supervision. This includes sample handling, media preparation, plating, incubation, environmental monitoring support, equipment upkeep, and accurate documentation in accordance with SOPs, safety, and quality requirements. The LA1 helps ensure efficient workflow and maintains an inspection-ready lab.
Key Responsibilities
• Receive, check, label, and log samples; verify chain of custody and sample integrity.
• Prepare samples (dilutions, homogenization) using aseptic technique.
• Prepare, label, and QC routine microbiological media, buffers, and reagents.
• Perform routine tasks such as plating, inoculations, and colony counting.
• Support environmental monitoring tasks such as contact plates, settle plates, and air sampling.
• Perform routine checks and upkeep on incubators, fridges, pipettes, and autoclaves.
• Maintain accurate, contemporaneous documentation in compliance with GLP/GMP/ISO requirements.
• Follow all biosafety and chemical safety procedures; maintain a clean, organized workspace.
• Collaborate with analysts to meet turnaround time and workflow needs.
Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma required; diploma or degree in Microbiology, Biology, or related field preferred.
• 0–1 year laboratory experience (academic, co-op, or internship acceptable).
• Basic knowledge of aseptic technique and common microbiology methods.
• Familiarity with common lab equipment such as balances, pipettes, incubators, and autoclaves.

• Attention to Detail: Ensures accurate labeling, records, and traceability.

• Teamwork: Communicates clearly and works collaboratively with analysts and supervisors.
Physical & Working Conditions
• BSL-1/BSL-2 laboratory environment.
• Standing, bending, and lifting up to 25 lbs (11 kg) required.
• Use of PPE including lab coat, gloves, and eye protection.
• May require evening or weekend work depending on workload.
