Aion Biosciences→
Computational MRI Physicist at Aion Biosciences in St. Louis
Job Description
At AION, we’re building sci-fi medical devices.
Our mission is to bring aging under full biomedical control. We believe this can be achieved through closed-loop hardware that reads and writes bioelectric states in living tissue using electromagnetic and acoustic fields – a control layer for cell reprogramming that chemistry and gene therapy fundamentally cannot provide.
We're looking for exceptional scientists and engineers to join us in building machines that make aging optional.
The Role
As a Computational MRI Physicist at AION, you will:
Build the computational layer that turns raw MR signals into quantitative measurements of tissue state
Develop physics-based forward models and digital twins of our low-field, single-sided MRI systems, from pulse sequence and field geometry through received signal
Solve the inverse problem: estimate T1, T2, diffusion, proton density, and other quantitative tissue parameters from noisy, incomplete measurements
Quantify uncertainty and determine whether observed changes reflect biology, noise, motion, field inhomogeneity, temperature, coil loading, or instrument drift
Develop reconstruction and parameter-estimation methods designed around unconventional field geometries, including large gradients and substantial B0 inhomogeneity
Design acquisition strategies that maximize biological information per unit of scan time, SNR, power, and hardware complexity
Build rigorous phantom and repeatability experiments to determine what our systems can actually measure, how accurately, and at what depth
Work directly with MRI engineers and biologists to move continuously between simulation, hardware, experiment, and biological measurement
Explore quantitative MRI, MR fingerprinting, field-cycling relaxometry, model-based reconstruction, Bayesian inference, compressed sensing, and learned reconstruction where useful
You
We value mission alignment, integrity, and ambition over pedigree.
Strong first-principles thinker who is comfortable working across physics, mathematics, software, hardware, and biology
Deep intuition for inverse problems: given a noisy observation, determine what physical state most likely produced it and how certain you are
Strong scientific computing and numerical optimization ability
Comfortable building models that confront real experimental data rather than living entirely in simulation
Experience with MRI physics, quantitative MRI, reconstruction, signal processing, Bayesian estimation, inverse problems, or computational imaging is valuable, but obsessive technical ownership matters more
