As part of our expansion in Japan, we are strengthening our local presence to support renewable energy and storage projects facing increasing grid integration challenges. We are looking for qualified and experienced candidates for Senior TransmissionPower Systems Engineer to join our APAC T&D team. This role reports to the T&D System Studies Asia Department and is based in Tokyo, Japan.

Context:
The Japanese power system is undergoing rapid transformation driven by renewable energy integration, grid congestion, and curtailment challenges. Developers and investors require better understanding of grid constraints and connection feasibility to support their projects.
AFRY is developing its advisory services in Japan to support these needs, combining international expertise with local market understanding.
This role is key to establishing AFRY’s presence in Japan. It combines:
power system engineering expertise,
pragmatic analytical capability, and
active engagement with local stakeholders.
The successful candidate will act as a technical interface between Japanese clients and AFRY’s global teams, while contributing to business development through technical credibility.
Regular working days: Mon-Fri., 8 hours/day, 5 days/week
Responsibility:
1. Market development & client engagement
Engage with renewable energy developers, investors, and stakeholders in Japan to understand grid connection challenges and identify opportunities
Lead or actively contribute to early-stage client discussions, including technical positioning of AFRY services
Support and contribute to business development activities, including proposal preparation and technical discussions
Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including developers, utilities, and industry players, in collaboration with the existing AFRY Japanese team from other departments.
2. Technical analysis & advisory
Perform simplified power system assessments, including grid connection feasibility, system constraints and congestion (load flow analysis), curtailment analysis
Apply engineering judgement to assess grid risks and opportunities, including in situations with limited data availability
Support early-stage project assessments where detailed simulations are not yet required
3. Project contribution
Contribute to delivery of grid connection and transmission studies for renewable and storage projects
Support preparation of clear and structured technical reports adapted to client expectations
Explain technical findings to clients, including non-specialist stakeholders
4. Interface with AFRY engineering teams
Coordinate with AFRY international T&D team for detailed modelling and simulation activities
Translate Japanese grid practices, requirements, and constraints into clear technical inputs
Review and interpret study results (load flow, short-circuit, stability), ensuring alignment with Japanese context
5. Strategic contribution
Support development of AFRY’s service offering in Japan (e.g. grid curtailment studies, interconnection advisory)
Contribute to market intelligence and identification of emerging opportunities
qualifications
Experience
Typically 8–15 years of experience in power systems, transmission planning, or grid connection studies
Experience in the Japanese power sector (utility, developer, EPC, or consultancy) is strongly preferred
Good understanding of Japanese grid connection processes and utility practices
Familiarity with practical constraints faced by renewable developers in Japan
Exposure to renewable energy integration, grid constraints, or curtailment challenges is a strong advantage
Technical competencies
Solid understanding of:
power system fundamentals (load flow, short-circuit, stability concepts)
transmission planning and grid connection processes
Understanding of power system operations and dispatch mechanisms, grid congestion drivers and curtailment logic, renewable integration challenges
Ability to perform pragmatic engineering assessments and interpret study results
Experience with power system tools (PSS®E, DigSILENT Power Factory or equivalent) is beneficial
Soft skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to combine technical expertise with client interaction
Comfortable working in an international and multidisciplinary environment
Fluency in Japanese is mandatory.
Ability to work in English with international teams and clients (written and spoken).
