The Assistant Director of Communication Access supports the Director in overseeing the daily operations, scheduling systems, and coordination workflows for agency communication access services, including American Sign Language (ASL), tactile, ProTactile, CART, and other communication modalities. This role helps ensure timely, culturally responsive, and high-quality communication access services that align with organizational accessibility goals and ethical standards. The Assistant Director assists with staff supervision, workflow management, scheduling coordination, quality assurance, and implementation of operational and strategic initiatives. The role supports professional development, sustainable workload practices, effective team communication, and the use of technology platforms and systems that support communication access services. The Assistant Director collaborates with staff, interpreters, vendors, Deaf community stakeholders, and agency leadership to support equitable and inclusive access practices. Responsibilities include monitoring service delivery trends, supporting resource allocation and operational reporting, addressing complex scheduling and staffing needs, and helping maintain continuity of services. As qualified and appropriate, the Assistant Director may also provide interpreting services in complex settings while maintaining a primary focus on operational leadership and team support.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assist the Director with daily operations and implementation of Communication Access services across the agency.
• Provide supervision, mentorship, onboarding, and professional development support to interpreters and administrative staff.
• Monitor workflow systems, scheduling operations, staffing capacity, and service coverage to support efficient and equitable service delivery.
• Serve as a point of contact for escalated operational issues, urgent communication access requests, and problem-solving related to staffing or service coordination.
• Collect, analyze, and report data related to service utilization, staffing trends, billing, resource gaps, and operational outcomes.
• Support budget tracking, invoice oversight, vendor coordination, and financial processes related to interpreting and communication access services.
• Assist with policy implementation, quality assurance initiatives, and compliance with ADA requirements, ethical interpreting standards, and organizational procedures.
• Coordinate and support technology systems, scheduling platforms, accessibility tools, and communication access resources used by the team.
• Collaborate with Deaf community stakeholders, agency leadership, interpreters, and external vendors to support inclusive and culturally responsive services.
• Assist with strategic planning initiatives, process improvement efforts, and development of sustainable communication access practices.
• Support recruitment, retention, and workforce sustainability efforts for interpreters, coordinators, and contractors.
• Prepare reports, presentations, and operational summaries for the Director and executive leadership.
• Help facilitate team meetings, staff communication, and cross-department collaboration.
• Provide backup operational leadership in the Director’s absence and help ensure continuity of services.
• As qualified and appropriate, provide interpreting services in complex or high-priority settings while maintaining primary responsibility for operational leadership and coordination support.
• Treat all members of the Advocates community with dignity and respect, in alignment with The Advocates Way and Advocates Human Rights policies. Promptly report any concerns regarding abuse or neglect of individuals served through supervisory channels or other required mandated reporting processes. Report concerns related to employee discrimination through supervisory channels or by following the Hate, Discriminatory, or Oppressive Behavior (HDOB) reporting protocol.
• Ability to work in a hybrid environment, with flexibility to work both remotely and on-site as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Fluency in American Sign Language and written English. Native and heritage signers are strongly encouraged to apply. Must possess strong interpersonal skills for working in a diverse, multi-lingual, multi-cultural community.
• Understanding of Deaf community culture, language, and intersectional identities required. Experience with Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, Hard of Hearing, and Late Deafened identities preferred.
• Must have experience with interpreting in a wide variety of settings with Deaf professionals. Experience in human services systems preferred; examples include behavioral health, substance use recovery, developmental disabilities, brain injuries, independent living resources, and/or language deprivation.
• Four-year degree (B.A. or B.S.) required, degree in related field preferred.
• Minimum of 6 years of professional interpreting experience or equivalent lived experience preferred. Diverse interpreter credentials encouraged to apply, including active national certification, alternate pathways, or retired status
• Minimum 1-year supervisory experience preferred.
• Experience with scheduling and coordination preferred.
• Must possess strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task. Basic computer and remote platform skills are required.
• Must have transportation access available during working hours to travel between sites.
• Must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodations.
