Job Description
Summary: The Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner is seeking a qualified individual for the Administrative Intern I – Financial Analysis position. This internship will support a team of financial analysts monitoring the financial health of insurance companies in Washington State, focusing on reviewing financial filings and ensuring compliance with state requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Provide general administrative support, including scheduling, document preparation, records management, data entry, and responding to emails or phone inquiries
- Conduct research on insurance laws, regulations, and industry trends; compile and analyze information to support agency work
- Assist with drafting reports, summaries, and other written materials related to policy and regulatory topics
- Support regulatory processes by reviewing filings and helping ensure compliance with state laws and regulations
- Contribute to project work by collaborating with team members, meeting deadlines, and completing assigned tasks
- Assist with customer service by responding to public inquiries and helping explain insurance-related information and consumer rights
- Participate in meetings by taking notes and supporting coordination of events, workshops, or team activities
- Help prepare presentations, maintain organized files, and support overall office operations
- Collaborate with staff across teams to support initiatives that strengthen consumer protection and insurance regulation
- Perform other duties as assigned to support division priorities and operational needs
Required Qualifications:
- At least 18 years of age at the time of hire
- Completion of at least four semesters or six quarters work (or equivalent) at an accredited college or university OR Recent college graduate (within 6 months of graduation) majoring in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Actuarial Science or a related field
- Knowledge of proper grammatical constructions and sentence/ paragraph development
- Knowledge of basic mathematics
- Demonstrated ability to follow directions, comprehend directives and regulations, conduct research and compile meaningful written reports
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
- Degree or course work must be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or foreign equivalent. If a degree was awarded outside the United States, candidates must provide a credential evaluation report. Proof of course work or degree will be required prior to employment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Coursework in Basic Accounting (required), with preferred exposure to GAAP accounting, nonprofit accounting, and/or taxation concepts
- Pursuing or recently completed a degree in Accounting (preferred); Business, Finance, or Economics also considered
- Strong ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize competing assignments
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated personal accountability and reliability
- Willingness to learn and adapt in a professional, fast-paced environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook
