Job Description
Summary: The Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development is seeking a Lakes & Ponds Aquatic Invasive Species Intern to support their efforts in environmental conservation. The intern will conduct aquatic plant surveys and educate the public on preventing the spread of invasive species while gaining practical experience in the field.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct aquatic plant surveys independently via kayak or canoe and document the species present
- Interview boaters using various state boat ramps to educate them on the spread and prevention of aquatic invasive species
- Ensure confidence in aquatic plant identification of common northeast species
- Correctly enter the plant data into an ArcGIS based program to document observations
- Present themselves professionally and respectfully while conversing with the public
Required Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid MA drivers license is required
- The candidate must be comfortable being in a kayak or canoe and around the water alone
Preferred Qualifications:
- The selected candidate will be comfortable working independently
- Be a self-starter
- Good communicator willing to approach members of the public to start a conversation
- Aquatic plant identification skills are preferred, but not required
- Familiarity with ArcGIS programs is a plus
