Job Description
Summary: The State of Oklahoma is seeking a Temporary Legal Research Assistant to support the 645 Conservation Commission. This role involves conducting legal research, preparing documents, and assisting attorneys with court actions.
Responsibilities:
- Researches legal data; prepares rough drafts and/or final forms of briefs and arguments
- Conducts field investigations to ensure accuracy of data and facts
- Locates and assembles legal material for use in docketing of cases
- Assists attorneys in the preparation and filing of court actions
- Answers inquiries concerning legal issues from the public and agency personnel
- Locates and interviews witnesses; serves notices and copies of pleadings
- Develops and maintains files on research resources; maintains law library
Required Qualifications:
- Completion of eighteen semester hours from an accredited school of law
- Completion of an American Bar Association approved legal research assistant program
- Completion of a bachelor's degree in legal studies
- Knowledge of legal procedures and documents
- Knowledge of the rules of evidence pertinent to field investigations
- Knowledge of the sources of information used in locating records and persons
- Knowledge of interviewing techniques
- Knowledge of legal report writing techniques
- Knowledge of legal terminology
- Ability to conduct legal research
- Ability to prepare materials for use in court
- Ability to interview witnesses
- Ability to evaluate, summarize and report results of research
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
Preferred Qualifications:
- Some agencies may require incumbents to be enrolled in law school, with this level fulfilling law school internship requirements
- Some agencies may require incumbents to perform in-court duties in appellate, capital and/or non-capital areas of public sector criminal law
