Job Description
High Voltage Electrical Technician
Spark Power, a trusted partner in energy in North America, is looking for a High Voltage Electrical Technician. The High Voltage Electrician / Technician is responsible for the installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of high voltage electrical systems (typically 5kV to 44kV+) including substations, transformers, switchgear, and transmission/distribution infrastructure. This role requires specialized expertise in energized and de-energized high voltage environments, strict adherence to utility and safety standards, and experience with testing and protection systems.
What will you do you as a High Voltage Electrical Technician?
Install, maintain, and repair high voltage equipment including power transformers, breakers and switchgear, protection and control systems including Bus systems and disconnects (distribution)
Perform acceptance testing, commissioning, and diagnostics on HV equipment, including: (Megger) (TTR), Power factor, relay protection testing
Execute planned emergency maintenance distribution and transmission systems
Interpret and work from: single line diagrams, protection and control schematics and relay coordination studies
Familiar with Electrical lockout/Tag out procedure and have Electrical Safety Awareness
Travel frequently to remote substations and project sites
Work extended hours during outages, including nights/weekends
Familiar with testing different types of high voltage and low voltage equipment.
Report, record, compute and process electrical test information in accordance with accepted standard practices
Perform switching, isolation, grounding, and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures in high voltage environments
Support and execute energization and de-energization procedures Business acumen; Demonstrates an understanding of business operations and priorities, using this knowledge to make informed decisions that support organizational goals.
Demonstrates the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks effectively to ensure timely and accurate completion of work.
Demonstrates an understanding of business operations and priorities, using this knowledge to make informed decisions that support organizational goals.
Work in substations, generation facilities, and industrial HV environments
Lead or support outage planning and execution
Mentor apprentices and junior technicians in HV procedures and safety practices

Do you have the Spark? Here’s what we’re looking for:
- Knowledge/Experience of performing HV/MV Circuit Breaker Timing Tests
- Strong understanding of high voltage systems and power distribution theory
- Advanced troubleshooting of HV systems
- Ability to interpret complex electrical schematics and relay logic
- High attention to safety, detail, and procedural compliance
- Strong decision-making in high-risk environments
- Ability to work under pressure during outages or critical failures
- Valid 309A Electrical License (or Powerline Technician / equivalent preferred depending on scope)
- 5–10+ years of experience in high voltage, utility / substation work
- Experience with testing and commissioning HV equipment (major differentiator)
- Working knowledge of: Ontario Electrical Code (OEC) and Utility standards and operating procedures
- Valid driver’s license with clean abstract
- Utility or EPC project experience
- DZ License
- Auto-cad experience
