Job Description
Summary: SEMCO ENERGY is a North American energy infrastructure company focused on providing affordable energy solutions. The Property Accounting Associate supports the accounting team by maintaining accurate records of the company’s property and assets, while also assisting with month-end and year-end close activities related to fixed assets.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain and update the fixed asset subledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness including creating and closing work orders
- Review and process construction contractor invoicing
- Record asset acquisitions, transfers, disposals, and adjustments in accordance with company policies
- Assist with monthly depreciation calculations and reconciliations
- Assist with personal property tax process including preparation of annual forms, processing of tax invoices, and maintaining prepayment amortization schedules
- Support month-end and year-end close activities related to fixed assets
- Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for internal and external audits
- Monitor capital project spending and ensure proper capitalization
- Help maintain compliance with FERC, GAAP and internal control requirements
- Collaborate with operations, engineering, procurement, and finance teams to verify asset information
- Identify opportunities to streamline fixed asset processes and improve data quality
- Participates In Company Training As Required
- Makes regular reports to the Manager of Fixed Asset Accounting
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field with 0 to 2 years property accounting experience
- Strong understanding of basic accounting principles
- Proficiency with Excel; familiarity with ERP systems is a plus
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities
- Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with cross‑functional teams
- Eagerness to learn and grow within the accounting function
- Maintain a positive work environment while interacting and communicating with co-workers, customers and management
- Maintain a safe environment for co-workers, customers and the public through adherence to company safety standards and timely reporting of potential hazards
- Adheres to Company policies and procedures related to the code of business ethics, compliance, responsible use of Company assets, and all applicable state and federal laws
Preferred Qualifications:
- Internship or coursework related to fixed assets or general ledger accounting
- Experience with asset management software
- Knowledge of GAAP and FERC related to capitalization and depreciation
