Reporting to the General Manager, you will lead a large and diverse workforce across operations, maintenance and technical teams to deliver safe, stable and efficient performance across the reduction lines. This role will suit a leader who enjoys complexity, values visible leadership and wants the opportunity to make a lasting impact through people, process discipline and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team of superintendents, supervisors, engineers, technicians and operators
Build and sustain a strong safety culture through visible leadership, clear standards and disciplined execution
Deliver safe, reliable and environmentally responsible production outcomes across the reduction operation
Improve operational performance across productivity, quality, energy efficiency and cost

Partner across the site to align maintenance, technical, operational and improvement priorities
Lead the delivery of improvement and capital initiatives that support long-term operational value
Embed continuous improvement and management system disciplines to sustain performance over time
About you
You are a credible and values-led operational leader with experience delivering results through people, systems and continuous improvement in a complex industrial environment.
We are particularly interested in leaders who bring:
Demonstrated success leading large, complex operational teams in aluminium, smelting or other high-hazard heavy industrial processing environments
A strong commitment to safety, environmental performance and operational excellence
Experience improving performance through disciplined operational leadership, team capability and continuous improvement
Capability to lead through complexity, influence across functions and build strong relationships with senior stakeholders
Experience managing budgets, operational plans and capital or improvement programs
A leadership style that is visible, inclusive and focused on building high-performing teams
Experience in aluminium reduction or closely related continuous processing operations will be highly regarded
What we offer
A permanent leadership role working directly for Rio Tinto at Bell Bay Aluminium
A competitive base salary reflective of your skills and experience, together with an annual incentive program
Domestic relocation assistance, where required
Comprehensive medical benefits including subsidised private health insurance for employees and their immediate family
Attractive share ownership plan
Extensive salary sacrifice and salary packaging options
Career development and education assistance to support your technical and leadership growth
Ongoing access to family-friendly health and wellbeing support
Leave for all of life’s reasons, including annual leave, paid parental leave and sick leave
Exclusive employee discounts across banking, accommodation, cars, retail and more
We know that great candidates do not always meet every criterion exactly. If you bring strong operational leadership experience in a complex industrial environment and are excited by the opportunity to lead at Bell Bay, we encourage you to apply.
Where you will be working
The Bell Bay smelter was established in 1955 and holds an important place in Australia’s industrial history as the first aluminium smelter in the Southern Hemisphere. Our northern Tasmanian site was chosen for its proximity to a deep-water port and Tasmania’s clean hydroelectric power.
Today, after decades of collaboration, innovation and investment, there is a strong sense of history, family and pride at Bell Bay Aluminium. Generations work alongside each other at our site, and we are proud to be part of the community.
Our site is situated at the mouth of the kanamaluka / Tamar River, approximately five kilometres from George Town and 45 kilometres from Launceston. Nearly 500 employees work here, making Bell Bay Aluminium one of northern Tasmania’s largest private employers.
Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, we produce around 190,000 tonnes of aluminium annually. Most of our metal is exported around the world to be used in industries ranging from transport, construction, packaging and electrical.
