Construction Layout & Survey Technician
Location: Virginia or Maryland Position Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire Compensation: Starting at $30.00/hour; higher pay available depending on experience and technical background
Position Summary
A growing construction and steel installation team is seeking a skilled field professional to support structural and miscellaneous steel projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. This role focuses on field layout, measurement verification, alignment support, and construction surveying activities on active job sites.
The ideal candidate has prior experience working around structural steel erection projects and is comfortable operating survey equipment in fast-paced construction environments.
Primary Responsibilities
Collect and verify field measurements using total stations and related survey instruments
Establish layout points including control lines, column locations, embed positioning, and anchor rod placement
Confirm elevations, alignment, and structural positioning during various project phases
Produce and maintain accurate field documentation and as-built information
Support steel installation teams by verifying proper fit-up, alignment, and plumbness
Coordinate with field crews and other trades to maintain installation accuracy and project flow
Assist with layout and installation activities involving stairs, shafts, structural framing, and miscellaneous metals
Utilize industry software and tools including Trimble systems, Bluebeam, CAD platforms, and Microsoft Office applications
Follow all site safety procedures and contribute to a safety-focused work environment
Travel regularly to active construction sites across the Mid-Atlantic region
Qualifications
Minimum of 3 years of experience in construction surveying, steel layout, or structural steel erection
Experience working with slopes, grades, elevations, and layout for structural or miscellaneous metals projects
Proficiency using total stations or similar field survey equipment
Familiarity with AISC standards and building alignment practices
Ability to work safely at heights, including aerial lifts and elevated work platforms
Strong mathematical and measurement skills with high attention to detail
Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with onsite teams
Willingness to travel frequently within the region
