Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde
An exciting opportunity for an Engineer who thrives on building secure, scalable platforms that make a tangible difference. Macquarie University's Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences is seeking a Cloud Engineer to play a central role in delivering innovative digital health research infrastructure.
You will join a multidisciplinary team working on ground-breaking projects including AiCT-MED and OneDementiaHub, that develop AI-enabled analytics tools, secure cloud-based research platforms, and digital solutions to improve medication management, dementia care, and health and aged care service delivery. This is a unique opportunity to apply your technical expertise to projects that directly benefit our communities.
Working at the intersection of technology and health research, you'll partner with researchers, clinicians, industry collaborators, and software development teams to establish cloud environments that enable data integration, advanced analytics, and the deployment of digital tools in health and aged care settings.
About the role
The Cloud Engineer will provide specialist technical expertise in the design, deployment, and maintenance of secure, scalable cloud infrastructure to enable digital health research platforms and AI-enabled applications. Working primarily within Microsoft Azure, you will build and maintain cloud-native infrastructure that enables secure data management, analytics pipelines, and digital application deployment.
Design, implement, and maintain secure, scalable, and resilient cloud environments, primarily in Microsoft Azure, to enable digital health applications, analytics platforms, and secure research data environments.
Build and maintain infrastructure-as-code solutions (e.g., Terraform) and develop CI/CD pipelines to automate provisioning and deployment.
Enable deployment of AI/ML services, APIs, analytics environments, and secure data pipelines; partner with software developers and data scientists to operationalise digital tools and AI workflows.
Implement best practices in cloud security, identity and access management, monitoring, backup, and disaster recovery, ensuring compliance with university governance, privacy, and cybersecurity requirements.
Work with researchers, Microsoft/industry partners, technical staff, IT services, and external partners to deliver robust cloud solutions and provide technical input into infrastructure planning and optimisation.
Monitor performance, reliability, and cloud utilisation to improve efficiency and cost management; develop and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and system architecture records.

Minimum 3+ years' experience in cloud engineering, infrastructure deployment, or DevOps roles.
Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Azure services and cloud-native infrastructure.
Experience with Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools, and building/maintaining CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps).
Experience enabling analytics platforms, secure data environments, or AI-enabled applications.
Sound understanding of cloud security, identity management, and infrastructure monitoring.
Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams across technical and non-technical contexts.
Desirable:
Experience with AI/ML deployment, MLOps workflows, data engineering, or secure platform operations.
Experience in digital health, health informatics, or research infrastructure environments.
Relevant certifications such as Azure Solutions Architect, Azure DevOps Engineer, or similar.
