About the opportunity
Join the InsideOut Institute for Eating Disorders at the University of Sydney and play a key role in delivering innovative digital solutions that support world-leading research, education and clinical impact in the mental health sector. As a Developer, you will contribute to the design, development and continuous improvement of digital platforms that enhance the Institute’s reach, capability and service delivery.
Working under broad direction, you will provide specialist technical expertise across the full software development lifecycle, from architecture and feature development through to deployment and optimisation. You will help shape technical decisions, champion code quality and collaborate with clinicians, researchers and stakeholders to build scalable, secure and user-centred solutions.This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced developer who enjoys solving complex problems, working with purpose-driven teams and contributing to meaningful digital transformation in a high-impact environment.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- Lead the development of software applications and critical system components, ensuring solutions meet project objectives and user needs.
- Collaborate on digital solutions by working closely with clinicians, researchers, product managers and stakeholders to translate requirements into impactful digital solutions that support strategic goals.
- Maintain code quality and best practices by writing clean, scalable, and efficient code, implementing testing methodologies, rectifying bugs and errors, and ensuring comprehensive technical documentation for software projects.
- Contribute to the digital transformation roadmap by implementing new technologies and refining existing systems to improve performance, security, and user satisfaction.
What Does a Typical Day Look Like?
Each day at InsideOut brings a mix of coding, collaboration, and problem-solving. You might:
- Work closely with clinicians and researchers to refine features or develop new tools that support mental health treatment and research.
- Spend time coding and debugging, ensuring the applications are efficient, scalable, and secure.
- Participate in the digital team development culture through testing, execution, and troubleshooting of software deployment.
Our Tech Stack
- Every project is different, but we usually reach for modern full-stack TypeScript tooling, a PostgreSQL database, and a GraphQL API layer. Our front end is built in React with a component library and headless CMS. You don't need to have worked with our exact tools — if you're comfortable in similar environments, you'll find your feet quickly.
Our Team
The digital team is a small team within the Institute of 3 developers, an ICT support officer, a clinical advisor, and a team lead. Every developer works on their own projects, where they get the freedom and responsibility to make their own choices about features and implementation, with the common goal of quality, safety and reliability. This is supported by a team culture of knowledge sharing and constant improvement.
The wider InsideOut Institute works in teams around our strategic priorities of Research, Digital Health, Clinical Innovation, Education and Public Policy & Service Development.

We're looking for someone with:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology or a relevant field with an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
- Demonstrated experience communicating effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, building strong relationships and influencing outcomes across diverse teams.
- Proven analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with strong attention to detail and the ability to make sound decisions in complex environments.
- Extensive experience in front-end and back-end development of web-based applications using a broad range of modern technologies, programming languages and scripting tools.
- Thoughtful judgement about the use of AI tools. Knowing when they help and when they don't.
- Strong project delivery experience, including successfully delivering digital solutions within Agile/Scrum environments and managing competing priorities.

- Following this, we will invite a final shortlist to an in-person interview where we will get more into your development skills and experience, including paper coding tasks and talking through technical scenarios.
