As our Communications Manager (Internal Communications), you will provide the strategic communication leadership needed to support a business undergoing significant transformation. You’ll support the SP Energy Networks Marketing and Communications Manager to shape and deliver a clear, future‑focused internal communications and events strategy that helps colleagues understand not just what is changing, but why it matters and how it supports our long‑term strategy. As a People Manager, you will work with the Internal Communications Advisor to devise and deliver the tactical communications programme aligned to the strategy working alongside multi-disciplinary communications professionals embedded in the business as part of the wider SP Energy Networks Communications Team.
Working at the heart of major programmes, including business integration and reorganisation, cultural change, operational excellence and readiness for RIIO‑3, you’ll translate complex engineering, regulatory and organisational priorities into compelling narratives that give people clarity, confidence and direction.
You’ll work closely with senior leaders to define messaging, influence decision‑making and ensure communications are aligned, high‑quality and paced effectively across the organisation.
You’ll also lead the planning, governance and delivery of communications across multiple channels to ensure a consistent, joined‑up colleague experience throughout periods of change. You’ll also own and deliver the organisation’s reward and recognition strategy—creating frameworks, campaigns and moments that celebrate success, build pride and reinforce the culture we want to shape.
From designing strategic engagement plans to supporting leaders through change milestones and operational priorities, you’ll provide support that strengthens leadership impact and organisational readiness. Through strong relationships, insight‑led planning and a confident, proactive approach, you’ll help embed new ways of working, build trust and create the understanding teams need to deliver for customers, communities and the energy system of the future.
Strategic Internal Communications Leadership:
Develop and deliver a clear, organisation‑wide Internal Communications strategy aligned to business priorities, safety goals, regulatory commitments and transformation programmes
Advise senior leaders (CEO, Directors, Programme sponsors) on strategic messaging, narrative development and effective colleague engagement
Translate complex engineering and regulatory information into clear, engaging content that is relevant and actionable for all audiences
As a key member of the SP Energy Networks Communications team, you will manage an Internal Communications Advisor, coach, mentor and support broader communications colleagues and collaborate with multi-disciplinary communications managers embedded in areas of the business to deliver your programme
Change & Transformation Communications
Lead internal communications for major business transformation programmes (e.g business organisational change, digitalisation, RIIO-2 delivery, network investment programmes)
Create change journeys, messaging frameworks and engagement plans that build understanding, confidence and adoption across technical and non‑technical teams
Support leaders in depots and operational teams to cascade key information consistently and effectively
Employee Messaging & Channels Management
Own the internal channel ecosystem (intranet, email, Yammer/Viva Engage, digital screens, operational cascade, field communications)
Ensure content is accurate, timely, accessible and tailored to different colleague groups (office‑based, field engineers, control room, leadership teams)
Develop editorial and content calendars aligned with business rhythms, milestones and operating plans
Ensure the organisation communicates with integrity—accurately, responsibly and consistently
Protect and enhance internal reputation and trust
Culture, Engagement & Safety Communications
Shape and promote culture‑building behaviours across the organisation—safety culture, customer-first mindset, continuous improvement and leadership visibility
Drive safety engagement through clear, timely and behaviour-focused communication campaigns
Partner with People, Health & Safety and Engineering teams to create communication plans that strengthen employee engagement
Leadership Communications & Executive Support
Craft compelling leadership messages, scripts, speeches and talking points for town halls, safety briefs, team meetings and strategic announcements
Strengthen leader visibility and credibility through clear, authentic and regular communication
Coach leaders on narrative development, storytelling and effective engagement with operational teams
Crisis & Incident Communications
Support the crisis and incident response process with clear internal communications that protect safety, operations and reputation
Act as a key member of the incident communications response team—ensuring employees receive accurate and timely updates
Maintain readiness plans, templates and operational communication protocols
Measurement, Insight & Continuous Improvement
Gather and use data, analytics and employee feedback to measure communication effectiveness and engagement levels
Translate insights into action, recommending improvements to channels, content and leader engagement
Benchmark against industry standards and emerging best practice (CIPR, IoIC, civil infrastructure, utilities sector)
Drive continuous improvement in IC tools, platforms and processes to enhance user experience and communication effectiveness
What you’ll bring
This role requires a degree in Communications, Employee Engagement or a related discipline, alongside proven experience in an internal communications–focused leadership position. You will demonstrate strong strategic thinking and business acumen, with the ability to translate organisational strategy into clear, compelling communications plans that support long‑term business performance. You will think beyond day‑to‑day activity, connecting communication efforts to wider organisational outcomes whilst anticipating risks, opportunities and stakeholder impacts before they arise.
A strong understanding of how regulated businesses operate is essential, including awareness of customer needs, engineering and operational environments, safety and risk considerations, and the pressures created by events such as weather disruption, outages or safety incidents. This position demands confidence in crisis and incident communications, as well as expertise in Internal Communications strategy development, particularly in change communications, leader coaching and effective channel and content management. Experience delivering integrated change campaigns and using analytics to measure impact and success is also critical.
You will bring a deep understanding of people, motivation, engagement and culture‑shaping communication, with recognised expertise in managing cultural and behavioural change. You will possess experience leading and developing people, working collaboratively across teams and successfully running multiple campaigns and programmes concurrently through strong prioritisation and structured planning. Exceptional writing, editing and visual storytelling skills are required, as is an ability to create high‑quality content across a range of multimedia formats, exercising sound editorial judgement.
Strong relationship‑building skills are central to the role. You will act as a calm, credible and trusted advisor, comfortable influencing senior stakeholders, providing constructive feedback and offering strategic communications counsel which guides leaders toward better communication choices.
Experienced working with creative agencies and managing external suppliers is expected, alongside a collaborative mindset and a genuine passion for innovation and continuous improvement.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital communication tools such as CMS platforms, intranets and Viva Engage is also required.
