Job Description
Summary: Fort Mill School District is seeking a Technology Intern to assist the Technology Services department in providing reliable and effective technology support across district schools and facilities. This role involves hardware deployment, network infrastructure tasks, device imaging, and general IT support, providing a hands-on learning opportunity for individuals pursuing a career in information technology or related fields.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with the physical removal, transport, and installation of computers, monitors, and peripheral devices across school buildings
- Prepare workstations for deployment including cable management and equipment placement
- Coordinate with building staff to minimize disruption during equipment transitions
- Accurately document equipment serial numbers, asset tags, and locations in the district inventory system
- Reimage computers using district-approved imaging tools and procedures
- Install and configure operating systems, software applications, and district-standard settings
- Test reimaged devices to ensure proper functionality before deployment
- Apply security patches, updates, and group policy settings as directed
- Assist with the physical installation and basic configuration of network switches and related infrastructure
- Run and terminate network cables as needed; label ports and document patch panel connections
- Support wireless access point installations under the direction of senior IT staff
- Provide Tier 1 technical support to district staff, resolving common hardware and software issues
- Assist with equipment inventory audits, tracking, and disposal in accordance with district policy
- Support technology projects during peak periods such as the start and end of the school year
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Technology or IT Coordinator
Required Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled, planning to enroll, or recently graduated from an accredited program in Information Technology, Computer Science, Network Administration, or a related field
- Basic knowledge of Windows operating systems and common productivity software (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace)
- Familiarity with computer hardware components, peripherals, and basic troubleshooting procedures
- Understanding of fundamental networking concepts (TCP/IP, LAN/WAN, switches, cabling)
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately and consistently
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage and document multiple tasks simultaneously
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work respectfully in a K–12 school environment
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks, including bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods
- Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team setting
Preferred Qualifications:
- CompTIA A+, Network+, or equivalent industry certification (or actively pursuing)
- Experience with endpoint management tools such as SCCM, Jamf, or Intune
- Previous experience working in a K–12 or public sector IT environment
- Familiarity with Active Directory, Group Policy, and basic system administration tasks
